Pretty much the same. Went from toy guns to hunting with pellet guns when I was in grade school. My dad and I hunted quite a bit together and did a lot of shooting. By the time I was in high school I was deer, hog and bird hunting without supervision.
For little critters I still carry the same Marlin Glenfield Model 60 (squirrel stock version) that I hunted wabbits with 46 years ago. To say that it hasn't failed me would be a bit of a stretch but overall I love that rifle. Nothing pretty about it after all these years but those scratches...
Whenever I think of a hunting rifle what comes to my mind is a bolt action 30-06 stocked in walnut wearing both a scope AND irons. Throw in a cabin set in the autumn woods along with some flannel and you're good to go.
