Is the .22 lr ammo offered via the Civilian Marksmanship Program any good? Similar to CCI SV or more like higher end Eley? Or cheap end LGS?

From CMP website - https://shop.thecmp.org/product/Ammo/4S22PISTOL-500

".22 Caliber Surplus Ammunition 500 rounds per brick.
FREE SHIPPING DOES NOT APPLY TO SURPLUS AMMO. **Limit 2 per customer/per year. Caliber .22 LR BALL., 40 gr lead round nose. Standard Velocity. 500 rounds per brick. Mixed manufacturer, Winchester or Remington. Manufacturer is not guaranteed. Army ordered for use in pistol, but is safe to fire in pistol or rifle."
Picture showed Winchester 40 gr Lead RN in standard velocity. With $25.90 shipping on limit of 2 bricks comes out to $105.90/1000 or $52.95/500 shipping. Not a good deal for me.

Looking at their web site, they offer Armscor HV by the case of 5000 for $405, and Winchester SV by the brick for $40, I've had better luck with CCI SV than either of those.
Same here.

In the "Affordable 22LR ..." thread, "boxed" Aguila 40 gr CPRN is $27.30/500 shipped and CCI SV is $379.50/5000 shipped - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...-shipped-pricing.902560/page-16#post-12877535

During my 11,000+ comparison testing of 47 brands/weights/lots of ammunition, CCI SV consistently produced 1/2"-3/4" groups at 50 yards and "boxed" Aguila 40 gr CPRN produced 3/4"-1" groups.

My 10/22 with KSA bull barrel (2 lb Volquartsen target hammer trigger) is now increasingly producing single hole 50 yard groups with "boxed" Aguila - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...nition-comparison.908102/page-2#post-12812234

The "thing" where any given 22lp may "prefer" any given 22lr ammo still exists.

Your expensive 22lr firearm could be happiest with inexpensive ammo. Your bargain shooter might only be good with top-end expensive ammo.

The only way to know is to buy ammo and shoot it. Eventually trends will appear (or so we all hope). For my 2¢ it's worth dropping a buck on a small sprial notebook to write such things down.

Your mileage may vary.

I know mine does, and no two of my 22s share a favorite "best" ammo. I have that list culled down and is a Note in the Note App on my phone.

I bought a case of CMP surplus ammo a number of years ago. It is Olin marked, in white 50 round boxes and 10 box bricks. It shoots "ok". Accurate enough for my handguns and just plinking around. I also bought a couple cases of CMP ELey bulk ammo a few years ago. This is better ammo, pretty consistent out of my Annie's. Not good enough for match shooting but good enough for offhand practice for match shooting.

I think it's just going to be luck of the draw regarding performance on their surplus ammo.

I strongly suspect, but cannot prove, that the CMP Olin ammo is the discontinued or at least unavailable Winchester T22 load. I've found it very accurate, but no better than other SV offerings from CCI and Aguila. Wolf Extra, Lapua or Ely it is not.

The Armscor HP load is VERY good for a HV hunting/pest load, but is available on the open market at a lower price.

Thanks. I agree.

I was just wondering if buying 5000 rnds was worth trying out. From the responses, probably not.
