I haven't been to the gun store for a couple of weeks. That's a long time for me. I was halfway expecting a get well card in the mail.
Anyway, my wife and I stopped by today, just to spread good cheer and boost the moral of the working people you know, but sure enough, there in the corner of one cabinet, they had "casually" stuck something that was likely to catch my eye.
It was a top break Harrington and Richardson, with a 4" barrel. I have wanted one of those since I was a teen, slobbering over the Shooters Bible, like most boys did a stolen Playboy. I mean I knew what to do with a gun. I wasn't sure at all about the Playboy stuff. I had visions of running a trapline "up north" somewhere, with a H&R top break by my side, even though I didn't know exactly where "up north" was, and I knew less about a trapline than I did about that Playboy stuff.
I owned a H&R 999 at one time, but it had a 6" barrel, and was missing a rear sight. I couldn't find a sight blade for it, and ended up eventually selling it to someone. I have literally never seen one with a 4" barrel. Until today.
Alas, it's not a 999 after all. It's a 926, which as best I can determine, the only difference is the 926 doesn't have the automatic ejector the 999 has. Ejection is manually by an ejector rod at the front of the cylinder. Other than that it appears to be about the same. According to the S/N this one was made about 1976, and still looks to be in pretty decent shape. It's a top break, 9 shot, DA/SA revolver. Crappy cell phone picture inbound.
It's resting quietly in the lay-a-way bin for the time being. I can't think of any reason to have it, other than the 14-15 year old kid who lives in me jumped with joy when he saw it. And it has a rear sight! I noticed some previous owner had put a drop of glue on the adjustment screws.
