Powder Valley just announced Alliant will stop producing canister powders for "unknown period" - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/no-more-powder.930412/#post-12896451

“... Vista Outdoor supply agreement for the sale of Alliant Powder canisters has been suspended for an unknown period. At this time, we have no timeline for the fulfillment and will be canceling outstanding Alliant orders in our system."

John,

This is a true post, and we weren’t hacked. Our Rep at The Kinetic Group reached out with that statement and told us any open POs we have open are no[w] cancelled in their system. They will reach out when they have something to ship us, last time we had to buy a 5 year supply of a couple different powders to get a small amount of powders that everyone is looking for.

Thanks,

OK, I went right to the source and called Alliant customer service just now at (866) 286-7436.
Person who answered the phone did verify that suspension of canister version of Alliant powders is indeed due to global shortage of nitrocellulose and while they are not stopping production of powder completely, canister versions will be suspended significantly while Alliant builds back up stock of nitrocellulose to resume large scale production again for canister powders. He could not comment when that would be.
When I asked for email confirmation and mentioned that THR member Paul @Alliant Reloading could not confirm/deny this announcement, he referred me to "Steve" who was in charge over him and to leave a message on voicemail for email reply.
This is Friday and it was indicated that Steve may not be in the office until next week. I will post back when I get an email response back from Steve.

So time to reactivate our "Same or similar/comparable powders" thread to replace Alliant powders.

I need more Power Pistol. I only got one pound left!
Consider WSF. It was my USPSA powder for major power factor.

Flexible powder (Like BE-86) to produce accuracy down to mid-to-high range load data. Produces higher velocities like Power Pistol yet much smaller muzzle flash - https://reloadingdata.speer.com/downloads/speer/reloading-pdfs/handgun/9mm_Luger__124_rev1.pdf

I love how much time you put into informing us. This was a lot of work to gather all this info and I just want you to know that it is MUCH appreciated.

What bothers me is the shortage of nitrocellulose. If you research where the US has been outsourcing all of its defense components it will worry the crap out of you. Especially when you consider the fact that we've basically outlawed/regulated nitrocellulose production out of the US. If we ever need to fight a real war we are screwed.

Thankfully I am retired and have time on hand, especially when it is raining to devote to my hobby/passion. And this is IMPORTANT topic.

I guess it's fate and destiny that I decided not to spend upwards of $60 per pound for AR Comp for upcoming 55/62/69/75 gr .223 load testing.

After comparing several powders and unable to source locally from four nearby counties, I ended up ordering more of H335 and BL-C(2) along with TAC from Natchez (I did manage to get one pound of StaBall Match from nearby county).

Winter/spring rain FINALLY took a break and we have week-long forecast of sunny days so I am preparing resuming 22LR 47 brands/weights/lots of ammunition testing at 50/100 yards - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...nition-comparison.908102/page-2#post-12812234

Viridian Serac 6-24x50 scope turret box testing at 100 yards - https://www.thehighroad.org/index.p...-tax-refund-sale.929399/page-10#post-12896190

Followed by .223 55/62/69/75 gr 100 yard testing with 0.1 gr incremental load development at the range/field with H335/TAC/BL-C(2)/StaBall Match in a new thread using newly built 18"/20" .223 Wylde 1:8 ARs.

With no replacement prospect for Promo, will start load development of 9mm PCC loads with RMR 115/124/147 gr bullets and No 2/Titegroup at 50/100 yards in a new thread.

I try to have a very diverse load databook. I've been using lots of bluedot, and have become quite fond of it.... 2400 is my cast load in 6.5x55. I'm happy that I'm not near as dependant on Alliant as others. Charlie98 will sell his truck and buy unique 🤯

Charlie98 will sell his truck and buy unique

I wised up after the last shortage... I've got nearly 12 pounds of Unique. Granting the widest latitude... using it in the .41 or .45 Colt... I've got 8500 rounds worth, and far more when you start thinking .45ACP. I will likely move to something else for the 9mm, however... probably WSF or HS-6... to take some of the load off my Unique stash. I've still got 2.5# of WST to use up in the .45ACP as well. I'm not worried.

I AM trying to sell my 2002 F-150... but if I used that money for powder, I don't think that would go over well with Mrs 98.... :ninja:

I haven’t been reloading long enough to have gone thru the last shortage, hopefully learning from this one. Sorta jealous of your Unique stash, as I’ve recently found a fondness for it in 45-70.
Hopefully I will stumble across some….. :)

Alliant Unique and Hodgdon Universal Clays
Outstanding Work, @LiveLife WOW! Thank you :)

I don’t think Hodgdon still makes Universal Clays. They have Universal and Clays on their website but I do not see Universal Clays listed any longer.
Also, I have had people tell me that Universal is a direct match to Unique. That is definitely not the case.

Example:
.45 Colt
Unique max load for 250 grain LSWC is 9.5 grains for 941 FPS.
Universal max load for 250 grain LRNFP is 7.8 grains for 941 FPS.
Definitely not the same.

The terminology of "producing" in conjunction with Alliant makes me think of the facility in Virginia. Alliant markets but does not produce ball powders (these are made at St. Marks) and they import their extruded rifle powders. I tried to line up the more readily available powders to the Alliant powders made in Virginia:

These all are in the category:

Comparable/close powders (Different load data, similar burn rate for reference BUT MUST USE published charge weight):

Red Dot alternates: VV N310, Nitro 100NF, TiteGroup
Green Dot alternates: TiteGroup, VV N320, SW Clean Shot
Bullseye alternates: SW Clean Shot, Ramshot Zip, WW 231, HP-38, VV N330
Unique alternates: SW Ultimate Pistol, AA2, VV N340, Ramshot Silhouette
Power Pistol alternates: AA5, SW Auto Pistol, VV 3N37, VV N350, Ramshot True Blue, Longshot, HS-6
Blue Dot alternates: VV N105, AA7, SW Major Pistol,
2400 alternates: AA TCM, AA9 and SW Heavy Pistol

The above comparisons were based on Quickload studies of revolver rounds.

These are my actual/anticipated powder substitutions:
  • Promo/Red Dot/Bullseye loads will be replaced by Titegroup/No 2/WST/W231/HP-38
  • Sport Pistol will be replaced by N320/W231/HP-38/Zip/W244
  • BE-86/Power Pistol/Unique will be replaced by WSF/No 5/Universal (May consider back CFE Pistol/AutoComp)

Well, I started using Sport Pistol for 9mm after so many here liked it. I've used a lot of it, and still have 2-3 pounds which will get me through until maybe next year. Before that I used W231 and still have ~3-4 pounds of that so I have loads for W231. Just saw HP38 locally for under $40 and almost grabbed a couple, guess I should have.

I have a couple pounds of Unique for 45 Colt. Don't shoot that much of it really but if I do looks like I may have to try some of that WSF I have way in the back :)

Its all good.
