Diagnose this Savage 10 ML-II problem for me?

OK, prior to season, range trip ==> All was fine.

Get out there first thing, first morning in the dark, and the bolt will not turn closed all the way on an unfired primer.

It will still fire from this 3/4ths closed condition, sometimes, and sometimes will not. On the last day it took 3 primer strikes to fire to unload the rifle.

Now, take the primer out from it's little holder and voila, the bolt closes all the way just fine and dry fires just fine.

On a FIRED primer, it would close at first, but later in the weekend would also not close all the way on a fired primer.

So whaddya think, just a good cleaning?

Nope...the rifle is shot! it has reached its lifes end...probably is dangerous at this point...

Tell you what i'll do...I'll take that ol' smoke pole off your hands for safety sake! lol hehehe

Maybe just dirty...or do you think you got a hold of some bad primers, I mean, not ALL of them, but some of them.
Also, maybe the firing pin assembly has developed a problem...

Sounds like the breech plug may be full o' crap, not letting the primer seat correctly.

Let me know tad...as I am cleared to purchase a ML10 in the near distant future....

I use fed 209 primers in my Savage ML II. I would check the breach plug . After a 100 shots its a good idea to take 5/32 drill bit thru the breech plug to clean out the carbon build up. Just make sure you remove the vent plug first before you use the drill bit.

99.99999 % of the time it is a dirty gun.........

That Bolt may have to be take apart and cleaned. You may be very shocked at what you find in there. Next , The breach plug may not be getting threaded in all the way. Then , as has been said. THAT NIPPLE must be CLEAN....
Use a drill bit to clean what you can and the make sure the hole is clean.

OH, and use very little lube on that bolt. If you are hunting in cold temps you may find it cold enough to SLOW down that bolt enough to not hit the primer hard enough.
