Small Game Hunting With Centerfire Cartridges

Old time hunters would stay in the woods a good while and live off the land. Small game loads for your big game rifle were a regular subject of the hunting and fishing magazines. Col. Townsend Whelen was a strong proponent. He used jacketed bullets so as to not have to deal with lead on copper or copper on lead fouling but used a different bullet so he could tell the small stuff by look or touch. He even tweaked them to shoot to the sights at close range without changing from the big game long range setting.

On the other hand, there was the guide who said don't be popping off shots at bean cans or rabbits around my camp and scaring off the elk.
