RVers, what are you using for a gun safe?

My brother lived and toured in a 45' 5th wheel for 4 years and used hidden compartments to secure his hardware.

Be very, very informed about the state laws you drive through. NJ, NY and MA will cut you no slack, and the day you get into an accident and they tow your rig, will be the day that any plans about skirting through unnoticed will come unraveled.

On a related point, many of the popular camp ground networks (like 1,000 Trails) have corporate policies that forbid firearms in all network parks. These rules are blown off by many, many campers and local park employees, but again, the day you have to file a police report may also be the day the park manager evicts you.

Note-

While parts of it may look like one, an RV is NOT a house.

Conventional gun safes are designed to be installed in houses and are not suitable for an RV.

Why Are they not suitable? Because houses don't move.

If you take a regular gun safe and bolt it in your RV, your guns will look like they went through a garbage disposal by the end of the summer.

You can probably get away with installing the steel box and the lock, but the interior needs to be built more like the gun rack you see on an ATV or in a police car. It needs to secure each rifle in a rubber padded mount that latches closed somehow.

I'm not aware of a gun safe made like that, but I bet it can be done custom.

I think using good rigid padded gun cases to hold the rifles, and then finding a way to secure the gun cases is a better idea.

You could just get a Pelican case and bolt it down. I'd think that would suffice.

That looks like a cool safe, but again it's not designed to move around.

It doesn't secure the gun.

Sure, an RV rides smoother than a lot of cars, but it still accelerates, brakes, goes around turns, and hits bumps.

I don't know if you have driven down any of America's highways lately, but doing so with the shotgun and pistol shown in that safe is going to absolutely bang them into each other and tear them up.

I guess if that's O.K. with you and your guns...

Pelican case, bolt it down, lock it with padlocks. It's designed to stand up to all the abuse an airline can give your gun, and then some, and still keep your guns in one piece. Really that's going to be your best solution. You're taking something that's already durable and designed for travel and affixing it to your RV.

Closed-cell foam does exist, isn't very expensive, and can be formed to cushion many different situations.

Get a truck bed locker for guns. has secure storage and is designed to transport long guns safely.

When I was traveling with my target 50BMG rifle in my 38.5' fifth-wheel trailer, it was stored in a soft case under the king-sized bed which raises up to provide under storage in three compartments. I attached a coated steel cable to the frame in the floor and padlocked the other end thru action of the rifle. Additional bedding stored there covered the rifle. Ammo was stored in similar compartment on other side of bed, again covered by more blankets. I also installed a padlock hidden on far side under skirting to give impression that bed does not raise for additional storage.

Other hardcases were stored behind and under the couch, again with a coated steel cable with one end securely bolted to couch frame Any bolts used were secured with GREEN LocTite which is a very secure adhesive for steel components.

I stay away from closets and bedside cabinets as that would be the first place I would expect a criminal to look.

My concealed carry stays with me and stays concealed - your methods may vary =YMMV.

IMHO, the Fort Knox Shotgun Box is probably the best compromise. It is, more or less, a plate safe with a fully mechanical Simplex lock. It uses better steel, better folds/welds, and thicker steel than most of the imported models. But it is also worth noting that, with a 10 gauge body, the amount of theft protection it provides is still very limited. You might be able to find one used on a forum or Craigslist. IIRC it weighs about 50 pounds.

The AmSec fast-access Defense Vault is known for having some functional & longevity problems. IIRC it uses either 14 or 16 gauge steel, so you can break into it with a hammer in just a few seconds.

IMO, the fully mechanical Simplex lock on the Fort Knox is, in every possible way, better.

Truly a sad State of the Union, though we ignore Government seizes on every infraction , just amazes me of errors my life how much liberty freedoms disappear without a yawn from the masses
