Another truck gun debate

IMHO truck guns fall into John Tappin's perfect packing pistols and as such there is no one correct answer. The quest will lead you to a collection of guns that bounce around a general versatility aspect one is always a little more capable in one aspect and deficient in another. Still a combo gun works well in this aspect I have a older 24 in 22mag/20g that I really like in the role.
A 357 lever also works well and I can tell you from experience a 38 special lead round nose or FMJ/ball ammo isn't any harder on cottontails than a HV 22 hollow point.

My Canadian guide carried a mod 24 in 22lr/.410. The only action we saw on that trip was taking 16 grouse with that dandy little combo gun. He carried 2 .410 buckshot loads in his ammo sleeve. He painted them blaze orange to identify them from the #6 birdshot.
I bought mine about 2 weeks after that trip, and have enjoyed it very much.

That's good to know. I have a Rossi 92 in 357. I used to hand load for it. Tack driver. Way more accurate than my little 32 revolver. Do you think it would be too much on a grouse?

16 grouse is a good haul. I usually stop at whatever we can eat that day. (So 2-3.)

That was a week's worth for three guys. We had baked grouse with rice and mushroom gravy a couple times. We knew they were abundant up there, so we were prepared. Also brought a few home to our families. We all had small game license, so we were legal.
I am a recovering Quail hunter, so it was right up my alley.
I still would have rather got my moose.

Wouldn't be much worse than a 22, the key is the low velocity of a 38 coupled with the round nose slips through without a large temporary cavity so you can as someone said eat right up to the hole.

If you handload powder puff wadcutters for it, you'll be able to eat right up to the bullet hole.

A couple grouse was my consolation prize from last moose season as well.

Mossberg 500 20 ga 26" synthetic.
I'll second the Mossberg 20 gauge, but I'd get it with a youth stock; much handier in the shorter configuration. Might even go with an 18.5" smooth bore barrel. Stick a slip on recoil pad on it to temporarily lengthen the length of pull. Great, inexpensive, versatile gun.

I do like the look of that Double Badger, though ...

You broke clay pigeons that had been launched into the air with a Taurus Judge?
back in college my buddy and I did with PGO remington and mossberg shotguns... a taurus judge would be easier being lighter... as long as not to far out :)

It's starting to get a little deep for me.

Clay shooting degree of difficulty: standard shotgun - easiest, PGO shotgun - exponentially harder, Taurus Judge with shotshells - even harder.

A Judge wouldn't be easier being lighter, it would be harder.

I have no idea why but a Henry Long Ranger in 7mm-08 appeals to me as a truck gun. Henry is supposed to be coming out with rifles chambered in more cartridges for this model. It would be nice to see one in 7mm-08.

Allow me to be the first to suggest something beyond the scope of what you're looking for and waaaaaay outside the budget constraints.

Plus you could put it on a truck. Truck-gun, get it?

Not a gun, grenade launcher. Hard to reload for.
