CMP approved to get 86,000 M1 rifles from the Philippines

WOW........ 86 thousand; and according to the article they are all still owned by the U.S. Government. Now the big question is; what would be the average condition of them? Even if they are kind of beat up the CMP is able to rebuild/refurbish them like they've been doing for many years. Perhaps sometime in the near future there will be a time estimate on when they should start getting here. After the 8 years of the previous administration in D.C. I had basically forgot about ever seeing a large amount of something like that coming into this country again. I'm sure that will help to stimulate the economy!

I hope this comes to fruition. Had to watch all the historical firearms sold by CMP years ago while I was raising a family and my hobbies never made the priority list. Kids are grown and gone! 86k should make for somw very affordable rifles. Fingers crossed.

Maybe they'll hit the shelves the same time as the 1911s. Wouldn't that be Christmas come early!:D

"...same time as the 1911s..." The CMP still hasn't been authorised to sell the 1911A1's. Update from 10/15/16 on their site.
Wouldn't count on the PI M1 Rifles either. I think King Obama's import ban of the Korean rifles/carbines covers anything from anywhere.

Great news. Besides the Philippines, are there any other countries who have lend-lease M1s?

The rifles in Korea are owned by the Koreans. The rifles in the Philippines are owned by the US. Huge difference. The misunderstanding of the Korean rifle situation never dies........................

The US military does not have to be bothered with import restrictions on it's own hardware, LOL.

Me too. I've got my Garand, but a carbine would be sweet.
Me three; Now that you guys got me thinking about it a nice M-1 carbine would be nice to go along with my nice Garand. My guess is that we'll just have to wait to see what they start shipping.

Same Philippines that let Marcos' multi-million dollar shoe collection* rot in the tropical humidity, right? ;)

Imagine how they treat stuff that *isn't* nearly as valuable...

OMG I have one I purchased in 1982 in Woolworths , believe it or not . They had pallets of them. Advertised in the paper as their gun of the month. I searched thru the stacks for a Springfield. I found one brought it home and researched it .It has a 6 digit serial number , manufactured in March 1942 . I'll sell everything I own before I give it up. The price at the time......$ 200 . I was just married at the time ,or I would have got a couple more . My favorite movie up to that time was To Hell and Back ,with Audie Murphy .Love those Garands

I have one Garand, two GI Carbines, and one Plainfield commercial Carbine. And a Remington M1903A3. I need a couple more Garands, I believe.....

Only problem with my Garand is it's a BEAR to get a clip in. I just did some tinkering on it, and it's better now, but it still isn't as easy to load as I see in a lot of videos.

I found that the oprod was dragging on the stock at the rear of its travel, fixed that. Also found the new spring was a lot longer than the old one, put the old one back in. Those fixes helped.

Granted, arthritis in my thumb doesn't help, but I'd appreciate any tips y'all might have! All the metal parts have been re-parked and re-blued, and it has a new stock. Shoots wonderfully, it's just hard to load.

I wonder if the prices will go down on these, or if the CMP will trickle these out to the market to keep the prices artificially high?

I wish there was some way to just circumvent the CMP and dump these all on the market from one of the bigger importers. You can bet prices would plummet and they would be available to all Americans, not just the ones the CMP approves of to own them.

Not this crap again...please! Any person who is not prohibited from owning a firearm can do the process to purchase from the CMP. Submit copies of the following:

*State ID and birth certificate.
*C&R license as proof of firearms activity.
*State NRA affiliate or Garand Collector's Association as club membership.

USPS money order to pay for it. Fill out the order form, and get it notarized. Mail it. Wait for the "We received your order" e-mail. Likely as not, you'll end up with a rifle, and a very clean condition one at that.

I don't particularly agree with the part about CMP approval (because it's so easy even a caveman can do it) but I totally agree with the part about holding the cost down. I do know that CMP does provide some value added in that they check them out and work them over if needed before releasing them. Some random distributor might not do that. And honestly the $630 I paid for my field grade last fall seems like a pretty good deal. But imagine Garands available for Mosin money....I would build a fortress out of them!

Before anyone bothers to tell me: yes, I realize that is nothing but a fantasy.

Well color me salty but I just don't think it's right that everyone has to be forced to go through the middleman that is the CMP if all they want to do is buy one of these rifles to enjoy. Americans should not be required to sign up for ANYTHING or prove you're a member of ANYTHING in order to get a firearm. As long as you pass the NICS check and you pay the cost it should be yours.

We'll just see if prices go any lower. 86,000 rifles SHOULD saturate the market and drive costs down quite a bit, especially with how the industry is doing lately, but since the CMP will essentially have the bulk of the M1 Garand market monopolized we'll see.

First, the primary business of the CMP is not to sell guns to the public. They are in operation to promote marksmanship by civilians. Making sure someone who purchases a rifle is a member of a shooting organization or two is a small hurdle for most that are interested in the sport.

As far as prices for their rifles, they are the best bang for the buck out there. I regularly see CMP Garands at gun shows being sold for 50% over their cost to the seller.

What happens to those rifles when they enter the CMP system as far as refurbishing and checking for safe operation is second to none IMHO.

If you want a bunch of rifles dumped on the market, lobby your congressman to get the Korean rifles approved for import. Then importers can bring them in and price them as they wish, sell them with little or no safety or function inspections. I expect them to be priced higher than what the CMP would charge for a comparable rifle.

I am cautiously pleased to hear this. The chatter about these offshore rifles has been around for a long time. I won't believe it until the rifles are actually in Anniston.

I already own two nice M1's. An M1 doens't have to be pretty to really enjoy a day on the range with it. It just needs to be reliable. After that, the shooter needs to have the constitution to spend a day on the range.

Lot of guys just buy them, and then it seems they do nothing with them other than post the same tedious questions about "what is it worth?" in 87 different forums on the internet. There are lots of opportunities to shoot your M1 with other M1 shooters. If you have one, please participate in our fun-matches.
