Can we go to 4 shot groups? That 5th one is killing me!

I have that issue as well. I just try to not look at where the holes in the target are while shooting groups and concentrate on the POI. Had that happen with some 53gr Vmax I was testing. 4 shots were a .227 group, the 5th made it a .780 group in 5 shots :)

In my extensive testing, I have had the best luck with one shot "groups". I suppose you could always shoot a 100 shot group and pick the best 5 out of them, that one should be pretty small too.

I get the same exact thing and it pisses me off to no end. I get a lot of joy making my cheap rifle shoot that well with handloads and there is always one that shoots a little off. I have the scope set to hole on a diamond and it shoots a little low like yours. next time im going to adjust and shoot for holes not the diamond.

Sure you can. I use 4 shot groups with my 308 bolt gun 'cause that's how much the magazine holds. But for my Garand, it's eight...;)

This load sure is consistent across the chrono

This is from the target posted above

Classic 4 and 1 groups. We all shoot them. :)

Yes but sometimes it's my 2nd, 3rd, or 4th shot. Then some days every thing clicks and fall into place.

Since I shoot more light 52-55gr 22cal, the wind plays havoc if it's out of the south on my range. I do find though that if I just keep shooting the same target they do group together with the BE MIA (gone). Like Bart keeps saying you need to shoot 25-30 do have a good idea of what your load will actually do. The exception to this is hunting ammo. You very seldom shoot more than 1 round and its on a cold barrel. So 1 shot groups are all your interested in. I have a target that has 20 1/2" dots for 1 shot groups. I always test the cold barrel on my hunting loads. In some cases there is very little difference in POA vs POI.

I hate it when the wind gusts on my 5th shot like that. Especially when it gusts straight up.

One solution is, when you get the first 4 shots touching, shoot the 5th completely off target and act as if it went through the 4 shot hole.

thanks for the good laugh!!!

you may be quitting on your follow-through on that last shot. make sure you follow that bullet down-range to that target on every shot. if that doesn't work for you, then load five and fire six.

luck,

murf

When I shoot for groups and record the results, if I get a flier, I record the four shot size and the five shot size.

It makes me feel better but I do keep the actual results. Deep down, I hope the flier is my fault and next time all five will fall in the size of the previous 4 shot measurement.

Always looking for the silver lining.:)
