Dianne Feinstein Pushes Ban on Commonly Owned Semiautomatics, ‘High Capacity

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) is pushing a ban on commonly owned semiautomatic rifles and “high capacity” magazines.

She announced the push via Twitter where she wrote: “Americans across the nation are asking Congress to reinstate the federal ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. If we’re going to put a stop to mass shootings and protect our children, we need to get these weapons of war off our streets.”

Well, she is certainly not behaving gracefully. After seeing for herself, the lack of value of the first, now 'sun-setted' (I hope that that is a word :uhoh: ) AWB, one would assume that she'd move on....

I cannot say that this was unexpected, but it does get quite old after a while. What concerns me more than anything these days is the lack of compliance to the Heller and McDonald SCOTUS cases by states like California and New York.

The AWB is an example of exactly what is meant by "Common sense gun laws". What did it accomplish? Seriously, anyone who supports common sense gun laws, what measurable results are the goal, and how does the AWB stack up in accomplishing this goal?

We were kicking this around in the office today. Conclusion...yet again...probably don't have to worry, but do pay attention.

I would consider it an opportunity to contact your NEW Senators and send a real paper letter demanding that they WORK to kill this proposed legislation as it will accomplish nothing constructive (like all the previous iterations of it).

You need to read or listen to what these same people (Chuck and Nancy) said when the AWB was passed. This was their bill. They really and truly wanted to ban every gun in America and were not shy about saying it. The AWB was a compromise law since they dialed it back to get enough NRA sensitive lawmakers to sign on. Honestly the fact it did sunset is probably one of the most amazing modern political accomplishments. Reauthorization is the norm for most everything in DC. Nobody thought it was going ro be anything but renewed and possibly harsher.

I wish to offer Ms. Feinstein my congratulations, and my every effort to help in getting evil assault weapons off our country's streets. I hereby promise that I will keep my eyes open, and if I see any of these dastardly weapons on our streets, I'll promptly snatched the poor homeless things up and give them a terrific "forever home" in my gunsafe!

California and new York don't think it affects them so they ignore it.

Any of them that you can't feed regularly you could always rehome for a small fee.

There are many bills being submitted right now that are gun related, not just federal but all over the country.

In this climate I'd be surprised if any went anywhere.

Except that NOW they control the House and the young voters; who now, by a 52-48% majority - favor Socialism and big central gov't control.

You folks who dismiss this with a wave of your hand had better watch the magician very carefully to see what her other hand is doing.

Every couple of years or so...they never disappoint. I consider it 'gratuitous' at this point.
Well, it's been 14 years since he sunset; which is eons in DC among the politicos. There's probably some focus testing that shows enough likely voters have no idea an AWB has ever been tried (was a teaching survey not long ago where many modern youth have no idea Prohibition was a real thing, and real law).

It might make for interesting reading, as the usual suspects have been quoted as saying that they were "not going to repeat" the previous errors of the first AWB. What that means could be scary--things like no grandfathering, or one time amnesty buy-outs, or such like.
Mind, the other issue is the very low level grumbling out of the NE where folks are starting to notice just how high non-compliance is.
As has been pointed out here before, the problem of non-compliance is that it's functionally the same as an outright bad; you can have your toys, but you can't play with them.

LOL... you're going to miss her when you see the guy who is likely the next in line to replace her from CA.

Here's an important thing to keep in mind: classes of weapons must be successfully demonized (in the minds of the public) before they can be banned. This constant harping on "assault weapons" (including the annual re-introduction of the AWB bill) serves to condition the public on the "evil nature" of these guns. Sadly, our side hasn't done much to counteract this propaganda. Even the very name "assault weapon" was coined by the antis, and is being used to good effect by them, with the apparent acquiescence of the gun community.

The antecedent was what was done to demonize fully-automatic weapons. Even as early as the 1930's, the media piled on to portray these weapons as the tools of gangsters, when in fact far more of them were used by law enforcement than by criminals. Now, there's nearly universal agreement that they should be banned for private possession. Even the NRA's Wayne LaPierre contributed to this mindset when he testified before Congress that machine guns were "already illegal" (when in fact they are not). Instead, LaPierre should have said that legal, registered machine guns were a niche hobby rather than a public menace.

If AR-15's are banned, it's going to be because the public (influenced by the media) will demand that they are. The politicians are not the prime movers in this. They merely respond to what their voters say they want.

That's true, but her replacement won't have nearly her influence and seniority. It takes years to climb the rungs in Congress.

I think it works both ways; the politicians and voters both respond to, and drive, each other.

Politicians, in the end, are after power. Charles DeGaulle said, "politicians pretend to be the servants, in order to become the masters." He was French, of course, but American politicians aren't any different just because America supposedly is a "free" country.

That's a bunch of bull honky

People said that about Kamala Harris too.

However, In her rookie year, shes already become about as influencial as Feinstein if not more in some respects

They couldn't pass a gun control law when they owned the House, Senate and the President's office. Harry Reid wouldn't even bring it to the senate floor. What makes you think it would pass now?

Gun control won't happen at the federal level. It will happen at the state level a little at a time. You only have to look at New York and Kalifornica to see it happening.
