when i was in 9th and 10 grade i was in birmingham, alabama in 06-07 after my parents got divorced. i was in J.R.O.T.C manly for the rifle team. i cant remember the rifle to much they first gave me, i think it was a daisy/avanti i cant remember. this rifle was super accurate for a lower end rifle but it fit me well. i shot my first 300 the 2nd or 3rd week and moved on to get my expert marksman badge quick. i think the rile was a 753, i would like to get one since i shot it well.

when i get the spare cash i would like to pick up a used 853 or even a 753 if its not to much. please let me know what they used in jrotc about 15 years ago. and some info on what one to get. thnks troy.

The CMP sells 853 referbs with the buyer’s choice of the "Monte Carlo" stock or the sporter type stock like is normally found on the 853. CMP ships their referb 853s with a decent NIB Daisy peep sight that matches up with factory globe sight. IIRC they're about $120 delivered. And you don't need to be in any programs to buy one- they sell these used 853s to the general public.

thanks i did not know just anyone could buy them from cmp. i'd guess the monte carlo if for scope use.

I'm sure the MC stock is the one most people choose. I did too, but after shooting 1-hole 10m targets got old for me I decided to try it for offhand plinking. In that role, the MC stock wasn't well suited so I started looking for a sporter stock as a replacement. I ended up buying the sporter stock from Numrich for about $25.00 delivered. After converting it to the sporter stock I added open sights from the model 953 bought from Daisy for a couple bucks. The rear sight needed a little work but after I was done I was happy with the result.

But for bench/scope shooting I would definitely go w/the MC stock. The wood is a lottery- there are very nice stocks that look basically unused but there are also some stocks that have sharpie rack numbers and even names written on them. This doesn't affect the function but can be a challenge to remove for refinishing. If you are able to go to one of the CMP stores you can select a gun from the stock they have on hand. But however you go about buying it, the CMP referb 853 is a great deal IMHO.

I got one of each stock style. The Monte Carlo stock was broken in shipping. It is a pretty weak design at the wrist. They replaced it no problem, they did what I asked and just shipped me a new stock for me to install myself. They are both pretty good as far as fitting me, and I see no problem with shooting offhand with the MC. A little bulkier, perhaps, but not too bad at all.
