But the TSA won't allow you to board an aircraft with a post maul handle (I have no idea why not when they will let me carry my 1 1/4 in. hickory cane on without question)

I converted mine into a knob head cane . And since I medically disable now TSA can't afford an ADA complaint.

Love these posts! Along these lines has anyone come upon the measurments of the canes, or sticks employed by Professor Vigny? I have read a bunch of his stuff, but actually description, measurment or clear pictures/drawings are lacking. Better still, does anyone know if there exist a “true” vigny stick or cane?

Also would love to see pics of those homemade efforts or modded canes.

Thanks!

The Vigny cane was described as a standard Malacca with a metal ball head. Length would be dictated by the distance between the user's relaxed wrist and the ground so the cane would be at the required length for walking comfortably. The use of Malacca would make for a fast springy defensive tool that would be durable and resistant to breakage on impact. Rattan would be a reasonable alternative, if not as attractive.

Resilience and durability describe the construction of the Cold Steel Dragon. Made from polypropylene. In a near fall my dragon kept me from hitting the floor. In a brief glimpse during the fiasco there was a deflection of about six inches while my 340 lb body was supported. And the cane returned to its original shape.

I prefer a staff to a cane and I’ve made several from black locust. One I made from ash was surprisingly strong and fast but lighter.
My next one will be Osage orange. I have some planks that have been aging in the barn for 10 years.
I have traveled with a walking staff with no issues. I have a titanium knee but I walk just fine with no limp except when I go through security. Over 60 and grey hair and nobody looks twice at me.

Right now due to medical issues I can't/won't carry concealed. I keep my 642 handy at home but since I take pain meds (5 weeks into Chemo) carrying outside of the house is not an option. So i carry one of my home made hickory / black locust canes. Don't really need them to walk but I do like them and at 65 no one questions them.

Americancane says, "The off set T has a very normal appearance, but has the functionality of a side-handle baton, permitting the cane to be spun and swung like the classic PR-24 police baton." Maple, walnut, hickory, cherry. You choose. Custom sized. Good luck and take good care.

At 72 I started back into Martial arts with an older 8th degree grand master of Hap Ki Do ! He took me under his wing because of my life time of periods of training in various martial arts and my spunk at my age with no surgeries to aid my arthritis and my great respect and gentleness despite (or because of) belonging to a 1% bike club (which I joined in my senior years) . Sometimes in the 4 days a week training for an hour a session he instructs me in my Stock cane which is about 1" of hickory and used for animals 20 years and refinished by my son for Christmas a couple years back , or my Brass headed Blackthorn which is 3/4" plus the knobs and the traditional Vigny length. I have used this before on dogs and would be attackers who thought better of it when wielded at night walking in strange areas with my wife. .I may end up giving that Blackthorn to my Sensei ; he is Korean and it is the perfect size for him and I always thought it a bit short for me. I can tell in his eyes and loving caress he likes it, He makes it hiss when holding it by the brass ball end . It is old , I think 50-70 years maybe and still intact. I prefer the Stock cane FWIW and the blackthorn get looks from security guards when I carry it :) just some NEW cane news .

As a retired LEO who has trained and been certified in the straight baton, PR24 and ASP,I can say the PR24 was my least favorite and most officers I worked with felt the same, especially if they began their career with a straight baton. Give me a straight wooden stick any day!!

Keep in mind that how a cane or stick is used can determine your future.

Poking it into the solar plexus or sternum, or striking the neck or head with it, can do a lot of damage. Program yourself to not do that except when deadly force would be justified.

Otherwise, strike at limbs or parry.

I went on a mission to customize a few stockman canes. Hand finished, carved, oiled and polished.
The one on the left is a heavy 1.25" hickory hexagonal cane weighing about 1.2lbs.
In the middle is one made of ash weighing .85" weighing 0.7 lbs
And on the right is another hickory, smooth finish at 1" and 1.1lbs

Now all I need is some training with them. The heavy one comes with me every day when I walk the dog.

Clavicle is a good area also.
When your arm doesn't work anymore and it hurts like hell you might not be quite as bad of a badass as you started out to be.

Semi related subject fictional movie use of a cane: Season 1 Episode 2 Better call Saul, Mijo puts a hurt on a couple of surprised young guys with Abuelito's cane. Good scene.

If I ever take to using a cane, I will probably custom make one. Hexagonal extrusions of titanium seem good to me. I’ve done some welding in my life.....yes on titanium so it should be simple enough.

It is going to be ugly and utilitarian and look like a weapon. Might give the average miscreant cause to look for an easier target.
