Which gun would you get?

I would go for the 1911, because they both serve a different purpose...you want to protect your wife, and you want to go from one gun to two don't you? The rifle will work just fine the way it is....you don't need it every day....for security you need the 1911 every day.....win, win, ….for me.

I'm assuming he already has other guns. Not many start out with a 9mm vbob or 6.5-06 (nor do most people who don't own a few guns already, know either exist) . I get the feeling he is just "wanting" another gun rather than needing "a" gun . Like most of us here.

Also it sounds like people are telling him to choose feeding himself and his new bride instead of buying a gun. First, he is building a house (I moved into my new build 3 years ago it's not a fun process for me.... actually if I ever needed a new home I think I would have it pulled in on axles. The headaches/ inspections / paperwork etc are frustrating) and getting married (congratulations btw. 17 years for me and I dont regret a minute of it). He is planning on having kids next year. I ain't getting the impression he is scraping by and about to spend his life savings on a dan Wesson. Lol.

I too try my best to limit my gun purchases to one a year. No real reason other than "why buy more" , Once you have a "collection" you start getting dwindling returns. I have guns I haven't seen in 15 years locked up in other places. I did really good too buying 1 or two the last 4 or 5 years. Then 2018 came with a lot of cheap police Trade-ins. He sounds like he is moving right along in life, Not asking for marital or life advice.....just gun advice.

If you touch that 721, you will only lower it's value by pouring $1,500 into that custom work. If you never intend to sell it then go for it. But if you might ever be willing to sell it, a prospective buyer might not like your modifications. He won't care how much you spent on it....he might be a 270 man who likes dull matte finishes. Think carefully.

Guns, other than some really high end collectibles, aren't really that great of an investment. But they're far better than clothing, shoes, jewelry and purses.

Clothing shoes and purses, absolutely.
I wouldn't say jewelry though.

I've been to hundreds of auctions. Custom rifles tend to bring a fraction of what was invested. It will lose far more value than the 1911. But neither will gain any either. I don't buy with selling in mind though. But that's my opinion, if the op plans on selling

If it’s an out of production classic, then that’s the way I’d go. The re-creation in 6.5 will still be available for quite sometime.

Really? Your on a public forum. A newlywed always gets "the business" in good fun, if you wanted to avoid that then you shouldn't have announced it.

I voted 1911 but in reality, there's really not enough info for a good answer. Do you already have 1911's? Hunting rifles? Do you hunt more than shoot handguns? Visa versa? Priorites.

Since both of these will be nice family heirlooms, only you can answer which one you want. Those who said 1911 now, send off the rifle in the future nailed it.

Both is always the best answer. It's up to you to prioritize and to decide the order.

If the 721 has a factory stock, and you'll let me buy it, I'll vote "rifle'..

Money...I have more than most....does it matter with how I feel towards others...I hope not! I drink snobby beer, because it's what I enjoy....but I don't employ my feelings to others...snobby gun folks (ain't sayin anybody is one) ruffle my feathers big time... just sayin...simply don't ask, when you know the answer ..duh!

Hunting rifles should be inexpensive and accurate. That is my personal opinion. So no way I'd sink that kind of money into a hunting rifle.

Given the choices you've given us I'd say the 1911 all the way.

I’m into handguns way more than rifles so I chose the 1911.

I don’t really need another 1911 though. One is fine for me. I’ve been into Sigs lately.

If you can find the pistol get that as it is discontinued. If none are to be found do the rifle.

Your only pistol is a Glock 43? That's a no-brainer. Get the Dan Wesson and have a nice full-size pistol to go with it. The V-Bob wouldn't be my personal choice but if you like it, grab it.

I voted rifle, but I'm not a 1911 guy. Sucker for a nice rifle, though.

Not a 1911 fan but I voted for it anyway. I hope you find one and enjoy it.

I also think that you need the pistol first. Just because they are no longer made and just will increase in cost in the future. Then look for an interesting beater donor and build the BBQ rifle of your dreams in the future with lots of before, in process, and after pictures. THAT will indeed something to pass down. Just my .02.

I voted rifle, cause thats what Id do. I dont care for 1911s, and Im primarily a rifle guy...BUT for you I think the Vbobs a better choice.

As to the hunting with a pretty gun? bring it on. If i can afford to buy or build a rifle like that, i can afford to have a professional refinish it every 5-10 years should it need it. between those refinishings i can buff out minor scratches and keep it clean enough to not to worry bout rust.

That dosent mean i dont think having a beater secondary rifle for those truly brutal day/hunts, Isnt a good idea. My beater cost me a about a grand to set up the way I want, and Ive owned/own a couple pretty guns, but not what I REALLY want....thats gonna be an expensive lay out.....

I ask the wifes permission before any layout thats over a few hundred bucks, not because I expect her to get mad if i just went out and bought it, but as a courtesy, She does the same for me.

I can't believe I'm the first one to say this, but; eww! Gross!

He can just take his wallet and his heathenly ways elsewhere, like to the local Fudd store where he can buy a nice Tupperware Axis for less money!

If it's what you want I can't criticize too much, but Tark does have a point on customs instantly being worth less than you spend on them. On the other hand, how can you put a price on happiness?

I'd probably go for the limited production pistol, for you because it will be harder to track down later.

Congrats on the wedding and a wife that is gun friendly. That said, I too am not a big fan of "pretty" hunting rifles. Accurate yes, but practical and dependable. Something I am not afraid to stalk thru a swamp in the rain and snow with......much less push my way thru briars with. Never understood the idea behind 9mm 1911s, especially high priced ones. Very little gain in capacity, smaller hole and less potent. Sure, factory ammo is a tad cheaper than .45, but for someone who buys a high end non-custom 1911, is ammo cost an issue? Again, I'm practical. Iffin I was gonna get a Dan Wesson 1911, it would be in the caliber the platform is all about. High price rifle, would have to be something that looked and shot just as good after 20 years of pounding brush as it did the day I bought it. Probably stainless with a synthetic stock impervious to weather. Iffin I already had a nice 721 in ought-six and all I hunted was deer, elk and Black bear, I'd probably just keep shooting it the way it is. But that's just me. I didn't vote for either of your choices, because as I said, I am not a fan of either. Not a big fan of making my choices by what others like either. Never understood why folks need to come to a gun forum and ask which gun they should get. Did you go to a couples forum and ask about which girl for a wife? Should be the same for a gun you want to stick a significant amount of money into.
