My dad bought a Taurus .357 poly protector against my advice. Today I shot it and was very surprised.

With the long grip and .38 reloads of 158gr swc over 4.0gr HP38, the gun was very accurate and pleasant (for a snub). I shot my 642 side by side. Accuracy was the same but i shoot the 642 compulsively, its why i started reloading.

With 158gr over 6.0 Universal in 357 cases it was still very very controlable.

I was skeptical but am impressed now. My Taurus 94 is a bit of a turd.

Small frame Taurii are a crapshoot. Older ones, for some reason, have good actions. Later ones, well, we've sent an inordinate percentage back. Usually timing or trigger issues.

So I've heard. My early 2000's 85CH has impressed me. I understand other have not been as pleased with theirs.

Heaviest trigger of any revolver I have ever shot.

I shot the Poly Pro side by side with two other Taurus revolvers. An 85 UL and the 5 shot 41 Mag they used to make. I don’t what it is about the Poly Pro construction but that trigger flat out is terrible. The 85 and .41 felt like custom shop triggers in comparison.

Do you have any experience with the Ruger LCR? If so, how do they compare? I've been been debating on getting a Poly Protecter or maybe a 617... I have an M85 that I've had for a couple of years now, and I haven't had any issue. I carry it everyday at work, but I kind of want a 357.

I do not. However, I am more tempted to try a 3” LCRx now. It seemed like the polymer frame absorbed a lot of recoil.

Must be a case by case basis with taurus. Trigger was better than my sp101. Machining in general was good and barrel was smooth.

That is becoming the general consensus to my experience with the Poly Pro. Don’t know why I got such a lousy one. If my finger was not on the trigger just the exact right way it was quite difficult to get the last quarter of trigger travel to release the shot.

This was double action as well. The single action trigger was quite accceptable.

I'm not sure how big the M85 is, but I've got a 617 and that thing is HEAVY.

For an all stainless revolver, it's pretty light IMHO at 21oz. Just looked up the 617. Says 28.3oz, so not too bad. I can deal with 7 more onces for a 7 round 357.

Taurus 85 is comparable to a S&W J frame.
Comparable in terms of size , that is - not in terms of trigger.

I have both the .357 Poly Protector and the Ruger LCR in .38. The LCR trigger is possibly one of the finest revolver triggers I have used in 43 years of shooting revolvers. The Poly Protector is a longer and much heavier trigger pull. My Poly Protector shoots very well, but boy is the cylinder release sticky and hard to release the cylinder. I have been lubing it with M-Pro 7 and cycling it, but have not seen a lot of improvement.
