Hello everyone!

It's been a while since I've been on the forum, grad school being what it is.

I'm mostly posting now because I've decided to sell my browning 1886 saddle ring carbine which I believe was made by Miroku in the 1980's. The gun has a round (as opposed to octagonal) barrel. I'd say the gun is around ~85% - 90% condition wise. It functions as it should, but has a few dings here and there on the metal. The stock has some dings, but no chips. The person I bought it from added a sling point to the underside of the stock.

Could anyone give me a ballpark sell value? I paid $1000 for it a few years ago.

Thanks in advance for your help.

L

Where have you already looked for comparison? Without clear pics, any guess would be just that, a major SWAG.

Ah, my apologies. I've seen book values from $900 - $1250 for a brand new specimen. I'll grab a few pictures and upload them.

Pics attached to this message. Thanks for any help you all can offer.

I agree - 800-900 is reasonable. The octagon rifles and NIB examples pull more.

I had one of those.... I regret selling it. In reality, it’s probably worth more towards $1200, at least if you are patient, on GB.

Thanks Llama Bob and Charlie98!

I know I'm going to hate selling this one. But I can't shoot it worth a darn. I love the engineering and mechanics of it. Not to mention the history. But I think it's just too much gun for me.

Well... tap the brakes for a second. Why is it too much gun? If you are talking recoil... well, that's an easy fix, for sure... assuming you reload. Get away from those factory-level hunting loads and drop down to some cast bullets over IMR4198 or AA5744, tooling along at 1400fps. Easy on the shoulder, fun to shoot... particularly in that beautiful 1886 you have there.

I sold my Browning over 10 years ago, after all this time it is still The One Rifle I Regret Selling... and that's saying something.

I agree that if the problem is excessive recoil, that can be addressed both with reloading and factory loads. The Hodgdon Trailboss data has a bottom load of 300gr at less than 1200 ft/s.

For factory ammo, Steinel ammo offers a reduced power 300gr load that might be of interest.

Charlie98 - I appreciate you asking! The main issue is that I have a hard time getting on paper unless I'm 25 yards or closer. The recoil is most manageable when I shoot standing (which of course hurts my accuracy even more.) When seated, I can't rock back with the recoil as I need to and while I am slightly more accurate (think 12 inch 3-shot "groups" at 50-75 yards), the recoil kills me. I'm not in a position where I can reload at this point but I have tried both 405 and 300 grain commercial rounds (mostly Winchester). I love the gun, but I just can't do anything with it.

Llama Bob - I'll give Steinel a look. I've never heard of them.

Black hills and HSM also make "cowboy" loads that are more in line with what that rifle was originally designed for.

No offense intended at all.. but you might end up regretting selling that.

The Miroku's are very well made 1886 Carbines... far better ( IMHO ) then any thing similar.

I have one with the round barrel and flip up ladder rear sight. It is capable of unexpected very good accuracy.

Maybe try a different rifle bag at the bench... one of these, with some of the grippy tool chest liners ( laying in the "valley" of the bag ) will take a lot of the kick out of bench firing.

Llama Bob - Thanks again!

bfoosh006 - I appreciate you saying that! Hmm... mine has buckhorn sights. Did you add the ladder sights yourself? Thanks for the tip on the tool chest liners too. I'll check them out!

Yours should have the flip up rear ladder. Folded down it just a V-notch, flip it up and it's a ladder sight.

I could be mistaken but this isn't a ladder sight is it?

Thanks for the google-fu bfoosh006!

No worries charlie98. That would have been super embarrassing if I would have been shooting with the sights not flipped up.

I'm going to try to get this puppy on a lead-sled and see what's what.
