Hello all ,
Let’s make this short and sweet. I’m an 80s baby ,father , husband , pharmacist , who just purchased a home in nj because my birth state /city of ny decided they wanted to price people out. Currently awaiting my firearms ID card and handgun purchase permit to comeback. I’ve been occupying plenty of screen time as per my phones analytics system watching YouTube videos on different handguns for home defense / indoor range shooting. Trying to soak in as much as I can prior to my initial handgun purchase (my wife is chastising as I type for watching so many “gun” videos ). I’d rather be well informed though so she’ll just have to deal with a little less cuddle time in the interim. Look forward to being an active member on the forum and hope to get plenty of positive of feedback from you guys to aid in my lifelong responsible pursuit of firearm bliss.
 
welcome to THR, wish i could leave NY to but don't think that's happening anytime soon. what guns have you looked at so far. are there ranges by you or are you able to use property to shoot.
 
Welcome aboard!
And don't believe most of what you see on You tubes.
IMHO there is no shortage of bad actors with video cameras.
Look for a class taught by a respected instructor.
Check out USCCA training videos even if you're not interested in conceal carry right now.

Do you live upstate/ city or Long Island. There are a few indoor ranges close by me. So far it’s been tough. Juggling between the glock family , H&k vp9 , cz p ( whatever at this point) and looking at sig , berreta. A lot of videos pertain to the concept of carrying which clearly I won’t be doing any of in nj so I could do with something more beefy. Waiting to get my card so I can go hold the guns in my hands and see which ones fit me best. Ideally I’ll probably like to have 2. One that will be strobe light and rmr out in the closet for home defense and the other as my range primary to get good at shooting a gun period. Possibly a shot gun and rifle to top it off.
 
Welcome. I feel bad for you but fear Va may be going the route of you folks in the North and those in the west.

As asked what are you thinking of getting?
Personally I love the M&P 2.0s for pistols. And ARs for rifles. But your laws may limit those options.

i am in orange county, 5 miles from pa and nj. get a gun that feels good to you, not the guy selling it or some one on youtube. it's ok to watch yt videos but watch with a grain of salt.
 
A .22LR target pistol would be a fine first handgun, IMHO.

If you feel the need for a long gun, Mossberg makes a 500 that comes with both a short and a long barrel for both home defense (short barrel) and hunting/target games (long barrel)---a lot of value for the money.

For a full size handgun for home defense you really need to hold and shoot as many as you can before parting with your money.
My personal preference leans towards 1911s and S&W "N" frames but you may prefer something with different features or greater magazine capacity (if allowed in your State---sadly not in mine.)

Yeah I’m getting myself acquainted with all that right now in regards to the laws. Actually i want to look into possibly finding a “criminal defense” attorney to get acquainted or even on retainer just so that I have all my bases covered. I see all the ads for lawyers whenever I watch my “ gun”videos as my wife would say. I guess I could look at it as having car insurance ( hope to never use it but it’s good to have just Incase of emergency). I’ll def give your m&p a look over. But I guess the biggest thing for me would be having the guns in hand which I can’t do just yet till I get my card.

Yeah I hear what your saying. I just came from a fresh out the womb knowledge basis and I can read read read but visuals are easier for me to digest. But I agree with ya.

Yeah seems like the lawmakers in my state don’t fancy the more is better motto. Are you referring to the browning 1911?? Features for me it’s hard to say. I see a lot of people like to mention trigger pulls , mag release and slide. But again I guess I’ll be better equipped to make a decision once i start cradling some of these babies.

i have debated getting a nj hunting license, i know many farms in nj, lou dobbs even said i could hunt if i wanted. were about in nj are you up north or south. i would have to see about the firearms card i guess. there are a ew ranges in north nj and many just in ny close by.

Sounds like you are approaching things rationally. As many have noted, try as much as you can before you buy.

My first handgun was a Browning Buckmark (.22LR) and I've never regretted that (still a good pistol, though the Ruger Mk IV is getting more range time recently).

I'm of the opinion that everyone should try one at some point, if only for the historical interest. Many people choose them for self defense, especially in states with magazine capacity limits. The 1911 seems to me to be second only to the AR-15 family in terms of the variety of options out there.

Hey there and welcome. I bought my first two firearms while living in NJ back in the early 70's. Rem 870 for hunting that was given to me because it quit working. Fixed it and then later bought my Colt Python because I fell in love with the look. Although it worked out well and is a great gun, I was lucky as it was all I hoped for in a gun purchase. Now I'm an advocate of shooting before buying. Either renting one at a range that does so or simply finding someone who is shooting one at the range and offering to buy a box of ammo for them if they let you try out their gun. I have found a lot of shooters who are quite proud to maybe have someone like their gun enough to buy one like it. See if you like the feel and how it recoils, how much ammo costs for it, etc. Always smart to do research first.

Finding a gun you like a lot (I hesitate to say love, gun love might be illegal in your state) can lead to a lot of fun trips to the range over many years. May you have much fun in your future.

Hint: Don't ignore the snuggle time, though.
 
I'll offer this opinion because it runs against the current fashion(and You tubers): don't be sold on stuff marketed as being "tactical"

Sure there are very useful items, like stocks that fit your hand better, and magazine extensions that permit a few more cartridges to be stuffed in a 12 gauge, and, well, stuff designed to part you from your money.

Gun mounted lights are very popular, but (my opinion) dangerous for HD.

True you may need to identify a potential threat in bad light to avoid mistakenly hurting a loved one---try that with a tactical gun mounted light and you'll be pointing your loaded weapon at them while under stress with your heart thumpety thumping, while moving around in a dark room.

Go into a dark room with a gun mounted light and a hidden, armed intruder will see the beam knowing the narrow end is where you will be, making you the target.

Keep in mind you're defending your home, and not part of a SWAT team.

My 2-centavos, anyway YMMV.

John Moses Browning was the father of the 1911, but most major manufacturers make some version of a 1911 nowadays. I'm of the opinion that everyone should try one at some point, if only for the historical interest. Many people choose them for self defense, especially in states with magazine capacity limits. funny i type his name in and he popped up and i was like what a minute i know this guy. i agree his videos are great and english is impeccable lol
