What kind of guns do the bad guys carry?

Not to side track the thread about types of guns which show up in police evidence, but I think SeanSW's experience is not that uncommon. I've been told and seen anecdotal evidence most residential burglaries are planned meaning the persons have an idea of what they're looking for, while auto break-ins are usually crimes of opportunity. So it behooves us all to be aware of who knows what is in your home, especially cash and guns.

You may have skipped over a few replies. I enter evidence guns and cartridge cases from crime scenes into the NIBIN system. Revolvers don’t get entered because you will hardly ever get cartridge cases from a revolver left at a crime scene.
Does that mean guys who use revolvers are more likely to get away with it?

Gunny, from your comments on the mishmash of ammo found in evidence guns it would appear that they do not shoot much except when committing the crimes, and perhaps are switching guns frequently and not as familiar with any particular or gun or even model. Is that your observation as well or not true?

There are some that like their hollow points, and then there are those that just pick up whatever they can get their hands on.
Now we do see a lot of FMJ. This is most likely because they want ammo that will run in just about any gun.
When it comes to guns on the streets the Glocks have been the king, with the S&W Sigma/SD taking second. But then again they will use whatever they can get their hands on.
They have pretty much gotten away from the cheaper guns and stay with th3 mid line stuff. But one thing that is very popular right now is high capacity magazines.

One I've noticed a few times on shows like "the first 48" or LivePD apart from extended mags in guns I didn't realize there were extended mags for, is 9mms occasionally being loaded with .380s.

This something you see often?

9mm guns don’t tend to run very well with 380. Now and then we get 9mm cartridge cases that were fired from a 40.
Now 9x18 is not so easy to come by. The thugs have found that most guns chambered in 9x18 will work great on 380.
Last year we had a guy shooting 357 Sig in a 40 S&W. By the marking on the cartridge cases I knew he was using a S&W M&P. When the guy was caught he had a M&P40 loaded with 357 Sig.

So mostly mid-priced full size and compact pistols rather than the tiny 'Saturday Night Specials' that people used to think of.

Some Saturday Night Specials are obviously still used. They just aren't out there quite as much.

I remember on one of those stupid shows... Elementary maybe, there was a drive by and the detective noted that 10mm were "gangster guns".

Uh, maybe they meant .40?

is it interesting at all that no "ghost guns" have appeared in your lists? or is that something that would show up more with larger criminal enterprises?

In the last six years I have only seen one "GHOST GUN" come through the LAB. It was a case being worked by the State Police and the gun was an AR15. I don't remember what the case was about.

Gunny said a couple pages ago the street price of stolen guns was well under the legal retail of the guns. $250 for a ready to go glock or $500+ for a kit that requires assembly and testing with some tools and at least a little patience. These things are seldom found in low level gang thugs.

Thanks for the info. I usually don't care what happens in the big cities. But occasionally my job takes me down town. More info about how it all works is a good thing.

Interesting. The day they start getting "smarter" people in the gangs it'll be intriguing for guys like Gunny.

I guarantee the ammo was mismatched in the majority of the guns.

Most of the guns of bad guys I encountered in my career had mismatched ammo.

Something I only learned over many years in police work... Just because we catch the stupid ones - doesn’t mean that all of them are stupid by any means. In their early years they do foolish things but the “system” actually educates them each time they go down.

The older and more experienced a bad guy becomes the farther they get from high risk low profit activities. Their crimes get fewer and much more profitable. Any use of firearms is rare and carefully controlled (at least when they’re sober).

Wish it weren’t so
