Do you use every knife you own?

I've always had a fascination with fighting knives. Since I don't engage in knife duels, I don't actually use them, so I do have some knives that are strictly safe queens.

Mine get fondled and oiled!

Before my forced liquidation of assets I had about 300 collectible Case knives, mostly canoes and hunters. This was in 2011, when prices were near rock bottom. At my last show I had a slab-side hunter than another dealer kept eying. As the show closed I asked how he did, he bought a few things and sold almost nothing. I sold him the knife for $20. He was elated and I had my heart warmed.

I still have about 40 collectibles and a few that were dad's that will be passed down. I have bought about ten new knives in the last two years, five have not been used, yet. I will likely never return to buying Case collectibles. For one thing, my dealer that I worked with moved to Seattle to remain employed.
Yeah oiled too, I have a soft spot in my heart for the Canoe pattern. One of my knife collecting regrets was a Bulldog brand bone canoe I let go in the 90’s

The ones in my kitchen get used the most. :)
I have one that gets used about every day, but it's a cheap folder that I keep in my right pocket. I have some others I keep with me and they get used now and then.
There are some in my toolbox and on my work bench that see some use. And then there are some that lived a hard life and now rest in a box, some to be given to my grand kids when they get older.

Lessee...
I have about thirty cooking and eating knives, fifteen fixed-blade hunting knives, seven utility knives, six fishing and filet knives, eight machetes or bolos, around thirty bayonets, about twenty swords, around forty technology examples ranging from flint and bone through Roman and Byzantine iron and bronze to modern ceramic and titanium, and the two that I carry every day.
Remember, two is one, one is none.
-And no, I don't use them all every day.

Armored farmer

I actually have two of those Remington knives. Got them on close-out, along with a Gerber lock blade, at Walmart a bunch of years back. Think I paid less than $30 for all three.

Kitchen, Old Hickory
Hunting, German steel skinners.
Bone chopper, Damascus Bowie or Hebron, if I remember right, Rambo III. A bit light at heel though. Don't smirck. The blade is tough. Cold blue won't stain it and it will hold an edge that sluffs hair off.
Fishing, a Stiletto in a cross draw sheath. If you have ever had one arm tangled you know why.
Electric for filetting.
Everything else, what ever I find.

I went through knife acquisition syndrome a few years ago all the way up into the $400+ range. Since sold all of those except a couple special ones given to me that have sentimental value. Around the $100 range (what they were purchased for then) is my sweet spot and rotate about 3 EDC knives. Some of them I wouldn't buy again because the prices on them now are pretty dumb. Then I have others that are strictly for working or outdoor use. The expensive knives did nothing better (and in some ways arguably worse) than my cheaper knives.

I have well over 100 knives ranging in price from sub $100 up to around $2500, I have probably 5 or 6 that I use none of which cost over $200.

I don't need to "use" the knives to appreciate the materials/design/craftsmanship that goes into the higher end knives I own.

I have a Benchmade Leopard folder I carry every day so it gets the most use. I also pack a Leatherman pocket tool when I go to the range & I use it to adjust sights mostly but occasionally for other things as well. The rest of my knives get used very little including three that have never been used; a Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowie, A Kabar Marine (an original my son gave me when he was in the Marines) & a Cold Steel Tanto folder. Recently I tried my hand at making knives & made a couple that came out good enough to use but really haven't had much need for them yet. I obviously have more knives than I need.

I tend to buy Buck knifes and yes I use them all. Over the years I,ve broken the tips on 2 of them. I just send them off to Buck and they recondition and fix them for free.

If I owned a Randall I'd use it, not just look at it. I don't own one but do own a few knives in the $200 range. And some of my favorites are in the $20 range. I tend to choose which I'll slide into my pocket, pack or on my belt based on the needs of the day. I don't worry about using or breaking the $200 one anymore than the $20 knife. I bought them all to use and enjoy.

I have one Damascus knife I bought in India that I haven't used or even sharpened. I don't even know if the steel is good, and the blade is not entirely tight in the handle. Beautiful, though.

Back in the 70's I worked construction & one of our foremen carried a Randall (very similar to the No. 1 shown in one of the pictures of this thread) on his belt every day. It was the first Randall I ever saw & the only time I've ever seen anyone that owned a Randal treat it as an every day using knife. It was a cool, his nickname was "Cactus" & nobody messed with him.

That Buck ad is pretty sketchy, things like "secret process to last a lifetime" and "so strong you can cut anything....even a bolt in two".

If I saw that today I wouldn't look twice with that wording, figure it was snake oil and they'd never make it. lol

Thanks Slamfire for posting the ad.

I have knives from makers that have a significance for varying reasons that are unused. I've thinned the accumulation and put those up for sale to re-purposed those $. The users are ones I've made, cheap labor LOL.

I got a Randall #14 when I graduated SF training 30+ years ago. At the time, I thought it was very necessary. It was used in the field some, but I soon realized it was larger and heavier than needed. It has lived in the safe for decades. I soon switched to a cold steel SRK (about $50) which proved more than adequate as a fixed blade knife for my needs. As our missions and equipment changed, I added a SOG knife to my body armor that has an even shorter blade. As far as the dozens of other knives I own, most get used for 1 task or another. I always need a knife, but depending on what I am doing, there is no "one knife fits all" solution.
