Camping tips

Wife and I are going primitive camping on slickrock this weekend with friends. Four days of sleeping in the pickup shell on foam pads, cooking over a propane burner, pooping in a bucket toilet, and hiking in the most incredible, remote county God ever created.

We'll take the ropes and harnesses and maybe even do a technical canyon or two.

I can't wait!

Over the years (now approaching 40 years together), we've camped in big canvas tents with cots, backpacking tents with foam pads, big trailers, a slide-in camper, in snow caves we dug ourselves, and under the stars. Our kids slept on tent floors, trailer bench seats, and napped in play cribs under Yellowstone's pine trees.

We've slept through subzero cold, thunder-lighting-and-rainstorms, awoke to 8" of snow on our rig, and in wind so intense that it bent the poles over on our cheap WalMart tent and laid it over on its side with us and our four kids in it! And plenty of clear, calm nights where the milky way looked close enough to reach out and touch.

The most fun we've had? Watching our kids do the same things with our grandchildren.

My best advise is to not assume that you'll get everything right the first trip. Go, try a few things, and figure out how to do it better the next trip. Keep trying dutch oven recipes until you've got several that you both love. Find activities you both enjoy, like canoeing, hiking, fishing, or hunting. Gradually invest in great gear; the most important gear for us was GREAT sleeping bags.

And have fun together!

Well just an update.

We couldn't do the state park campground and after doing some digging about the primitive free spots they get pretty busy and don't look all that great. I found a private campground for $25-night with canoe trips, go carts, restaurant, etc. She will have access to showers and bathrooms, so that good. She bought a couple Lodge skillets and pots, fire grate, hot dog forks, etc. The only issue we are running into now is a new tent. My tent is trashed, so now trying to find a decent cabin style one. It also says rain in the forecast at least one of those days. Leaving Friday around 6pm, at the park about 730pm, cook some dinner and hit the hay for a morning fishing trip/hiking trip, afternoon canoe trip and an evening of sight seeing. Sunday we have to be checked out by noon, so I will wake up and make her breakfast, start tearing stuff down and then more fishing. BTW all this is her plan of what we are going to do. I sure hope it doesn't downpour on us and ruin the weekend. I'm racking my brain because I see some tents with good reviews and then bad ones that say leaks, etc. Its like who do you believe? I was just going to spring for a Cabelas outfitter tent, but she wants something cabin style to stand up and get dressed and store stuff.

Wife and I always packed prepared for rain Plan B camping.

We used large dome tent (Much easier to setup than cabin style tent) with multiple rooms for kids/porta potty/storage but quick access to stuff with large dome big enough for standing and queen sized mattress topper with plenty of room leftover for extra bags. We were looking at the burgundy one. I’m 6ft6 so she wanted something I could somewhat stand up in. She also bought a 22” high queen air mattress. It’s supposed to rain and wanted somewhere to sit inside. I have a canopy I’ll bring Incase. The tent we were looking at is just like the one in your last picture.

Well, you know ... If it rains on your camping trip ... I guess you will just have to make happy memories inside the tent. ;):D

Maybe it's fate.

Oh trust me that’s probably going to happen. I said we don’t need a queen bed because you can use my twin and I’ll sleep on the ground. She says oh no your sleeping with me! I wanna cuttle! She’s having a melt down now because the tents trashed and she can’t find one tall enough for me to stand in. I told her I lived in a 6man dome tent for 7 days at a time I’m fine!

Stanley makes a great coffee press. Stainless steel and durable plastic and wire mesh plunger. It’s on my buy list for this year hunting season.

And personally I like cots better than air mattresses

Expecting rain? You may want to set up a tarp as a dining fly for cooking.
Yes, it is supposed to rain Saturday evening off and on and Sunday off and on. I have a 20x20 tarp I usually rig up to cover us when hunting, Ill do the same this weekend.

Well I have a very bad feeling this trip/her first is going to be a disaster! First the State Park campground is full, so she says there is a private campground right next door that offers 20% off their canoe and go cart rides. She books the site and says ooh its 1012x12. I am thinking dang, this is one big campsite, but its in the woods so maybe that's part of it. I get online just now and see their description says length 1012 and width 12. I have her call them and they say, oh no, our primitive sites are for a max of a 4 man tent and 1 vehicle and the campsite is actually 10ftx12ft. She freaks out and asks for the largest site they have because if we cancel 7 days before we lose $40. They say our largest is 14ftx17ft. There is no way we are fitting a decent size tent in that site with my truck, picnic table and fire ring. She explains to the girl on the phone that the website says max occupancy is 8 people, so how is the site only able to accommodate a 4 man tent? The girl says too late for refund and that's what we get. They have open field campsites that claim to be larger, but there isn't any privacy. Now I'm trying to find a tent that will fit a queen air bed and fit that small campsite.

Remain flexible and go with the flow and keep it simple.

Focus is having camping fun, regardless. Wife and I camped in the pouring rain, hellish desert heat, freezing snow, through dry lake bed dirt storms , zero visibility fog, etc. etc. but still had fun. There were camping trips where we ate nothing but dry and canned foods inside the tent the whole time due to pouring rain.

If it's too late for refund and is expected to rain, I would go to contingency plan for rain and small camp site:
  • I would just plan for tent and truck parking (14x17 should work)
  • I would go with the tent YOU AND YOUR GIRLFRIEND will be COMFORTABLE in (After lifelong camping, don't compromise on sleep comfort or quality of snuggle). I would still recommend 2" - 3" memory foam mattress topper if feasible (Your back and butt will thank me later and it will never go flat while resisting certain amount of rain water on the floor). For cold night/morning camping, memory foam will provide insulation/warmth.
  • Bring extra towels to keep by entrance to soak up rain water from shoes/boots and keep the tent floor dry
  • Forgo the campfire, especially since it's expected to rain (Listening to rainfall is calming, therapeutic and great for snuggling)
  • You could use tailgate for stove and food prep (stove works in rain for boiling water for coffee, cooking in pots with lid, etc.) and setup tarp over the cooking area/chairs
  • Use easy to prepare foods. Our back up Plan B is sliced cold cut/cheese, even Kraft singles with tomato/lettuce along with condiments and bagged chips (Lays BBQ is my wife's favorite). Wife's comfort food is grilled cheese and soup. I usually have things prepped for morning omelette.
  • For me, hot dogs with Hormel no bean chili is comfort food, especially with some Kraft cheese melting and chopped sweet onion. I have changed things with using smoked polish sausage or Italian/German sausage cooked over campfire. (Of course, we always try to cook ribeye steaks or eat at steakhouse, if available). If you got a non-stick pan, quick easy meat/veggie stir fry is great for tacos and nice camping treat (We even grabbed extra Taco Bell sauce packets for camping during early years. Now, homemade pico de gallo with fresh quick simple guacamole (mashed avocado and salt) .
  • Paper plates/bowls for easy clean up and utensils in zip lock bags.
  • Must have favorite beer/soda packed in ice inside ice chest (No matter how cold it is) and they are rain proof.
For wife, camping is all about spending QUALITY TIME WITH ME. She says it doesn't matter whether it rains, hails, snows - camping is camping. We retired to redwood coast and it rains A LOT (100 inches a year) and drinking morning coffee under the patio watching the rain pour over the redwoods is our winter/spring routine.

If you don't already, I have breathable rain gear (jacket/pants) and able to pursue most of my activities/hobbies rain or shine.

We use clear plastic bins/totes with lids and they are nice to stack and visualize contents inside and easy to toss inside the ice chest without getting wet.

I'm not sweating the rain, its the campsite size that has her completely flustered. She wanted the cabin tent so badly and now we wont have room for it. I told her last night if it rains, I have a propane stove and small pots and pans I use. When I camp its December and snow/rain and cold, so I cook in the tent anyways. I told her lets buy cold cuts incase it does rain hard we have something to eat. Apparently you cant move their picnic table or fire ring as they are fixed. My A-B plan is as follows.

A) Pitch tent, tarp over it and table. Friday will be rain free, Saturday it starts around lunch time. She says she is fine with fishing in the rain or hiking in the rain. We both have rain gear.
B) If wet, I cook on propane stove either on tail gate or on small 2ft fold up table I have or we just hit the campground restaurant. Sit under the tarp in our chairs and just watch it rain and talk. If the site is really that small I will tie my 20x20 tarp over the entire site and we can be sheltered. Instead of fooling with mixed review tents I am seriously thinking about getting a Cabelas Alaskan Guide tent. Only concern is it may get too hot. I think if I run the tarp overhead we will be fine with a small tent to just sleep in and most other stuff can be done under the tarp.

Fear not. You can make tasty stuff on a camp stove.
Just don't leave the cork screw at home. That would be tragic!
I'd be concerned about the drainage for those campsites---are they elevated?
Take a lantern that throws nice mellow light (a kerosene lamp filled with citronella can pull double duty on skeeters) and a fun board game.
If you can cover your fire ring with one corner of the tarp and the other three corners down so the water runs away, you might still be able to have a fire, use a dutch oven, etc...the tarp just has to be high enough not to melt or get holes burned in it.

She found a tent at target that will work. Kind of worried about leaking so going to spray waterproof it. Still tarping it. Her tent says taped seams and has a decent rain fly but I always spray waterproof on them.

Well just another update.

She purchased a tent several years ago from target and never used it. She told me the other night she was setting it up to see how big/what it was like. This thing has 3/4 of it mesh but its supposed to be 67 degrees at night for the low. I have a 4/6 man dome tent that I am bringing just incase. She left hers setup last night in the rain and says its bone dry. I'm still going to waterproof it to be sure. We went to Cabelas looking for hiking boots for her and she tried the cheapest pair of Redhead boots they had and they have terrible reviews. I tried talking her into letting me buy her Keens or Merrels and she wasn't having it. She then finds zip of short/pants and grabs a gray pair for her and hands me a gray pair and says see now we will match! (I am so screwed!!) (I ended up with green pants and not grey) We then spent the next hour at Cabelas while she looked at clothes and other camping gear and had lots of questions. Off to Wal-Mart for food and other supplies. Tonight I am washing my dome tent at the laundry mat and waterproofing both of them and leaving air out until 5pm tomorrow when we leave. She bought and packed so much stuff I don't think it will fit in my truck bed. I told her lets use the smaller tents we have this weekend due to the small camp site and next time I will buy a Cabelas Alaskan Guide series tent for more room and durability.

ROTFLMAO - I am dying laughing with my wife with tears in my eyes (Happy tears, of course ;):D).:rofl::rofl:

Well well, looks like she is ALREADY acting like your wife.

You might as well give up now and get used to "QUEEN OF EVERYTHING" notion (I actually got wife a "Queen of Everything" coffee mug) - I learned that from "Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus" thing.

But how can you put a price tag on happiness? If you like her, just gaze deeply into her lovely eyes and smile big and tell her, "< Insert endearing tern like Honey/Sweetheart >, whatever will make you happy, I am happy" and give her a big hug/kiss whenever she plans/does things that make you go nuts and toss your "more practical/reasonable" plans goodbye. :p Believe me, when things go wrong with her plans/notions (And THEY WILL), she may acknowledge/admit that you were right all along and IN TIME, may let you plan/do things your way. < Hint, hint - Tip for happy relationship/marriage for getting to do things your way but ALWAYS honor/respect your girlfriend/wife's plans/notions FIRST ;) >.

It has worked for me going 24 years. I have been telling my wife she needs to thank God because God sent her a Happy Husband to make her a Happy Wife.

Wife was skeptical for the first few years (We are both first born and thought we both knew how to do things pulling two separate ways ) but as one by one, all of her friends, cousins and neighbors divorced, she now THANKS ME and ALLOWS me to do whatever I WANT that MAKES ME HAPPY because she tells me I spent the last 24 years making her happy.

For retirement, we have a whiteboard with two columns, left column for her "honey do" projects and right column for my "hobby projects" with "no questions asked" policy and things on the whiteboard get done in the order of priority (High to low). This way, wife is happy her projects are given priority and as her projects are worked on/completed, she encourages me to pursue my hobby projects.

Just yesterday, went to an estate sale and bought a bunch of tools for her "honey do" projects (I collect USA made tools and equipment) and a bunch of tools and things for my "hobby projects" including a nice rolling stainless steel table for the prototype machine rest build better than the table I had already bought which now will be part of the outdoor kitchen (My Pacifica was packed full and I need to go back with the truck today for rest of big stuff). And I also found a complete reloading set up around Dillon 550 with multiple caliber conversions and extras (powder, primers, dies, etc. - As you asked, this is how I "collect" my reloading stuff to PIF :D) to check out today to go along with my Dillon 650. So what goes around will come back around.

As to camping plans/notions for us, even though I spent most of my growing years hiking, backpacking, rock climbing and camping all over the place from Canada down to Mexico, my girlfriend/wife pushed her plans/notions when we first met. When her plans/notions did not pan out and my original plans/notions worked instead, she sheepishly smiled and said, "Well, I guess you do know things about camping" and let me do things my way thereafter. Now she just says, "Call me when we are ready to drive off (and plays with her chickens/turkeys/mini piglets and soon rabbits) :D

Half of estate sale haul (All USA made tools and equipment) next to two bags of turkey feed.

What a deal!!!!

Yeah, while at Cabelas last night the shoe salesman says "I will let your Husband help you with these" (Because she was in a dress). She turned around and had a huge smile on her face! I said, Oh, Lord!! She says hi Husband. I did feel terrible the other night because she went to the store and bought a flashlight (not bright enough-100 lumen) two pillows, small ceramic knife with sheath, food covers that are mesh, two small battery fans and a few other things. It was late at night and already driving around town trying to find a tent, air bed, food, eating dinner with my best friend, I told her I already have a camping knife set, I have a pillow, I have flashlights (yours isn't bright enough) those fans aren't going to cool a 6 man tent and just take up space and $. After being the biggest jerk in the world the look of disappointment on her face killed me. She says I was just trying to help. Ill go get my $89 back. I said I have everything already. I told you this. She also tricked me into her buying my pants at Cabelas and a pair of fishing shorts too. Oh, can you go get this for me and when I come back she already paid for the pants and shorts. I told her we will do whatever she wants this weekend. I don't know if we can do the canoe trip because the river is in caution mode which means no non swimmers (me-accident when younger) and next level they only allow rafts. We will still fish and go cart and mini golf and sight see.

Focus of camping trip is having fun together (And not the logistics of planning). Everything else is secondary.

Focus of shooting is hitting your targets. No amount of misses count.

Stay focused on your primary objective and everything will fall into place.

I don't think you were a jerk because you didn't know what she didn't know (Believe me, this won't be your last time). So COMMUNICATE BETTER. We are all human and will make mistakes. But each time we do make mistakes, make note of what went wrong to not repeat that mistake again. Because if we make the same mistake again, it maybe seen as "intentional".

See her as an eager machine gunner looking for targets. Well, give her some targets and she'll be happy. ;)

One target suggestion could be making a list of items needed for the camping trip/and items you already have and say, "Honey/Sweety, could you help me pick X, Y and Z for the camping trip?" And be very specific. On certain non-critical items, say you trust her judgement and ALLOW herself to go crazy and buy whatever she wants. For BOTH of you to review before paying. This way you are shopping TOGETHER with a certain amount of freedom specific to your expertise.

After she picks out the items, thank her and provide positive accolades for the correct items and politely/nicely suggest "better" items. This way she feels good about being a helpful/beneficial girlfriend and wife in training. :D

Wife told me she was pushy because she was trying to help me enjoy a better life. When our daughter pointed out that I some how managed to find a job and shop/clean/do laundry/cook for myself all the years prior to meeting my wife, wife replies, "But isn't your life much better?". And I respond, "Way beyond my dreams" with a big smile as our daughter rolls her eyes.

I am learning to give her tasks to do. I purchased a Cabelas fishing rod combo last year the tip broke on while fishing and Cabelas used to offer lifetime warranty on their brand gear. I called her and said hey, your better at talking to people than I am so will you see if they will warranty this rod? She got them to do it. The bad part of it was finding a comparable rod because BP is killing off the Cabelas brand with junk. She kept bringing me rods that were either too light, short, tall, wrong reel type. She got so mad at herself because she kept getting the wrong one. I said you don't know anything about this, but I will teach you, so you aren't doing anything wrong. I asked her to pickup my FART that she talked them into selling for $99 because of an ad mix up. I am really ticked about the campsite size being misleading on the website and slightly irritated about the gear situation but she wont ever see it. Her first trip I want to make it as nice as possible.
