I think I've asked this before but I don't remember. This little 410 I got shoots a 3" shell. Can I also shoot 2 3/4 in it without any problems? Thanks.

Always OK to shoot shorter shells, but not longer. Just be aware that most of the time longer shells will chamber. I know for a fact that 3 1/2 shells will fit in the chamber of MY 3" 12 ga. gun. But it would be dangerous to fire it. The length stamped on the barrel and ammo box is for a fired shell. Before firing they are actually 1/4" to 1/2 shorter than the designation. An unfired 2 3/4" shell is actually about 2 1/2" long and varies some by manufacturer. Once fired and the crimp opens it will be 2 3/4" long. An unfired 3" shell will chamber in a 2 3/4" gun. But there is no room for the crimp to go when fired creating an over pressure situation.

Not too many 2 3/4" .410 shells around, but if you find one, yes, along with the common 2 1/2" ones, you'll be fine shooting it out of a 3". Some .410 autos (Like the Noble Model 80 I had long ago) will not cycle 2 1/2" shells.

I shoot .410-2-1/2" in my 3" chambered Mossberg 500 .410 exclusively without problems.

I have so many .410-2-1/2" hulls from shooting competitive skeet, I see no sense in buying a few 3" shells for my use.

One can always shoot a shorter shell in a longer chamber but not the other way around; and, as mentioned previously, a .410 comes in 2-1/2 and 3", not 2-3/4.

I've shot some Aguia 12 ga. mini shot shells (1-3/4" ) in my Rem 870. They shot fine but cycling is not so reliable.

But again, shorter shells will shoot fine ion a longer shotgun chamber.

The mini shells are more suitable to a break open shotgun than a pump or semi-auto, but they can be shot in a pump or semi auto if you are willing to cycle the gun manually.

What is the issue with them cycling in a pump?

Sometimes they flip end-over-end in pump guns. You have to learn how hard or soft to work the action to keep them from doing it.

I’m not sure if your make and model of your .410, but the 2 1/2” .410 will not work in a Remington 1100. They work with 3” .410 only.

Stay safe.

You’re lucky, the 2 1/2” shells are a few bucks cheaper at most places. Mine won’t reliably run with them at all :(.

Stay safe.

The 1100 skeet model was designed to run 2-1/2" as that is the legal load for skeet. If yours isn't working properly there are a few things to check out - the port opening, the friction ring direction - make sure the former is clean and the latter is installed correctly.
