Lethality of 9mm FMJ at very low velocity?

A .44 ball is about a quarter ounce and I would expect even a Deringer to substantialy beat 200 fps.
Probably closer to a third of an ounce. Not that far off from the weight of a 9mm bullet, actually.

200fps is probably on the very low end of the scale. The one source I could find suggested that a modern reproduction of a .41 BP derringer provided about 425fps.
 
I went looking for the information I stated in my post, but could not find it again. You can read in one place it was a .41 and in another it was a
.44. If there a site or info that gives facts about such things?
 
I would imagine that the parameters of the original post could prove deadly if the impact point were the neck, inner thigh, or inner arm and struck/severed a main artery. Victim could bleed-out in a very short time. Impact at the correct angle into the eye socket may cause critical brain damage as well.
 
Did the Nazis not use 9mm handguns with low power loads for much of the Einsatzgruppen and other Holocaust shootings?

I don’t know that I’ve ever read what ‘low power loads’ actually meant though.
 
This is what you'd have to do: Fire 10 rounds of a given ammo of your choice over a chronograph and check the velocity at 10 feet from the muzzle. You can calculate the energy from that point. Now set up your sheet rock (or whatever obstacle) at to 10 feet from the muzzle. Set up your chrony just beyond the obstacle at a distance (where particles from the board are less likely to pass the chrony and give you a false reading) where you can hopefully measure the velocity of the bullet as it goes through the chrony. Weigh the remaining bullet. from there figure and that will tell you the energy retained.

Out my way a young boy was killed when a stray 9mm bullet went through the front door of an apartment, through an interior wall of sheet rock, and into his head as he sat playing the piano with his teacher.

Another instance was a 9mm going through an exterior wall of an apartment building, through an interior wall and hit a woman as she slept entering her chest.

Both were ball ammo. JHP will have less retained energy.

Another interesting case was the one involving an errant round at a shooting club. The round left the range, perforated the outside of a building, took a ricochet off a ceiling and killed Trey Cooley who was sitting inside another building on the premises.

 
A 115 gr. bullet would yield 31 lbs of energy @ 350 FPS

Here is my heel shot from a 7 gr pellet target pistol at close range at approx. 350 fps.(wad cutter) Approx. 1.7 lbs of energy. shot from pistol pointing down.

By the way that calcaneus can do with orthopaedic review if you have symptoms. You have the start of a calcaneal spur there and they could check the insertion point of the achilles also (we get a thing called Haglund's syndrome in that area).
That's all unrelated to the pellet injury.
 
One could almost "Dodge bullets" at that point...
you can Dodge paintballs if your looking right at the player shooting at you, those are usually shot at 280+/-.

What would you describe the lethality potential of a 124 gr 9mm projectile at roughly 350 fps and 45 fpe?

What if it struck the torso, head or even the eye with low resistance path into the cranium?

I can try get my .357 bulldog pcp down to 350 with the 140lead bullets I have on hand (I suppose I could core out a few 140s to make them 125ish also).
I know I can get down to 450 without sticking one, and it will still penetrate a good inch or so into the side of a mango tree.
can shoot some old sheep Hinds i was gonna use for dog food....

That was at Dallas pistol club back in the early ‘90s. Sad it takes a tragedy like that to ensure bullets can’t get away. They have gone beyond what most ranges do though, understandably. That one cost a Father and Mother their son, a boy his life and the club over 3 million dollars.

That brings back bad memories for the shooting world and the family.
 
300 fps is basically the same speed as a paint ball. They can leave a bad welt if hit close range and the ball does not break. I think it would depend on the bullet weight and the type of bullet if it could even break skin. If it did, the penetration would likely not be life threatening.
