What kind of guns do the bad guys carry?

I am guessing it would be hard to get the truth from a inmate.
You'd be wrong. It's very easy, all you have to do is ask.

The problem is getting accurate information from an criminal, because, IME, they don't really care what they are using or where it came from. It varies with different cultures, but they usually aren't very attached to there tools

A few months back, a AR on display at my LGS, was grabbed and the thief took off out the door and was gone before they could do anything. And as mentioned before, thief's are not that bright. Turns out, he had paid for a yearly membership, used the range that day and had signed in. Not to mention he was caught on Camera. The LG owner told me, they called ATF which came in and took evidence but have not heard back.

I would be interested in where the actually get their guns. I have heard from friends and relatives etc. but I am guessing it would be hard to get the truth from a inmate.

I have asked that question when I worked with inmates. Its firearms related so it vastly interested me to know. Number 1 answer was stolen. Either they stole it directly from a vehicle or house. Maybe 1 was stolen from a store. Often times someone else stole the firearm and traded it to another criminal for something they wanted: a car, chainsaw, mostly drugs or sex. A distant second was a straw purchase, usually a girlfriend or some other significant other.

Our beloved gov. Made the Saturday night special against the law many years ago. They didn't want the bad guys to hurt themselves with some crap of a gun. Now days they only use the best. And our beloved gov. Is as happy as little beavers on the golden pond.

Makes you wonder if the judge informed the convicted felons that possession of a firearm is no longer a right. Maybe there is just no penalty for being caught with one? Seems like a cure for a lot of this would be the death penalty. Unfortunately the latest political solution echos that old saying in the military about the search for the guilty followed by the punishment of the innocent. :)

They know. Jail and prisons are like the colleges of crime. They may not have letters after their name, but they know what they’re doing. They discuss this stuff endlessly.

For the Thug Life and criminal subculture guns are just tools of the trade for intimidation, to pose with and to commit murder with. They don’t use them like we do (to protect, to hunt with or as a hobby). There’s just no getting around it, they need guns. So they’ll do whatever they need to in order to acquire them.

A lifetime prohibition on guns just means it ups the ante a bit if they’re caught.

What they use is what they can get. If young men and women new to adulthood without rapsheets can readily buy firearms bad guys yet to have a rapsheet as well as friends of theirs will get them guns. There will always be some in their circle that can legally obtain firearms.
Even if those people are held accountable later, they likely got away with it quite awhile before an investigation involving a crime with a gun linked to them even traces back to them. A bad guy's girlfriend may have bought him or his gang dozens of guns before she is charged for it.
They also steal lots of guns in burglaries and car break ins, I imagine I could go down to Texas and have a gun or multiple guns in 20 min by breaking into a handful of cars parked on a street.
Organized crime can acquire anything available to common law enforcement groups quite readily and will have some law enforcement on the payroll or on their side, or even intimidated or blackmailed into working with them.
In fact organized crime are so sure of their own ability to stay armed that they have often been behind pushes for increased gun control. The Sullivan Act of New York, and similar legislation in Chicago has been tied to support from organized crime that preferred fewer armed threats. That little shop owner or someone else acting on their behalf that goes crazy and kills you for collecting protection money they or their family would be hurt or killed if not paid puts a dent in the business model and it is preferred they are disarmed. Laws that help with that are not feared to interfere with staying armed as a criminal gang, but will reduce the threat posed by normal civilians to them.

When cheap inexpensive guns were available the short sighted criminals most prone to do stupid things for minor gains acquired some of the least expensive guns on the market.
Then lawmakers decided it was those cheap guns being too cheap that made them prone to become favored by criminals and so artificially tried to raise the price of all guns by banning the less expensive types.
Well the result is most criminals will now have better quality more reliable firearms.

Texas isn't the wild west. There's not a gun in every car. Hell, you get into some of the suburbs and you'll not find many at all.

Granted, it was largely the DFW area but I dated a girl down there once and not a single of her friends had even shot a gun, let alone owned one.

Gunny,
I find it a bit disturbing to see several rifle caliber pistols used for some heinous crimes in the last several lists. Is this a new trend from where you sit?

I find disturbing the murder/att murder, felons in poss and drugs. I think drugs leed to other crimes. I was fortunate being brought up and living in a drug free / low crime areas or not being able to notice it.

I have to wonder how many of those "felon in possession" perps are going to spend any time in prison.

A basic problem in sentencing is that absent mandatory sentences, a judge can pretty much sentence as they wish and many areas elect judges that are very lenient in some jurisdictions and a harsh strict one in others. Thus, similarly situated individuals may be treated radically different depending on which judge is sentencing them for a crime.

If you have mandatory sentencing, then it risks injustice because it treats all convicted the same when the facts of the individual case may not warrant it. For example, NJ's treatment of firearms brought through from out of state by visitors or travelers.

Prosecutors tend to like mandatory minimums and easy crimes to try such as possession of a firearm or drugs instead of more difficult to prove cases where intent is a factor or some other element is difficult to prove.

This is nothing new. The bad guys have been removing buttstocks from AKs for years. Then the DRACOs came out. Now days they are starting to use more ARs and AR pistols because they are lighter and have less recoil. Plus they cost less.
The guns listed as Att. Murder of a Police Ofc were from where a guy shot at the police from inside his house. My friend was shot in the lower leg.

Most of the guns we pick up have something to do with drugs. Most of the felons have long RAP sheets with charges that you would think would put them behind bars for life.

We lock them up all the time. They just don't stay in very long. Also if a Juvenal gets Juvenal Life for Murder, he gets out at 21.

Also, the news does not report all the crime in your area. They want you to have the perception that you live in safety.

Does there seem to be a firepower escalation among the bad guys due to new conflict over drug markets? I noted that you have documented an increasing number of high capacity magazines with seized weapons. I am a bit worried that ramped up drug violence as in past peak in the late 80's to early 90's might lead to draconian restrictions on firearms for the law abiding.

No matter what laws are passed the bad guys will arm themselves with the best weapons they can get.
Gunny
What does "Found Property" mean in your list of seized weapons??

Bull
Found Property is just that, a Found gun.
A lot of times when there is a shooting and the police are quick to arrive on the scene, the bad guys will run and throw their guns.
Many that run from us are armed. They are just trying to get to where they can throw the weapon before we catch them.
We get calls where someone finds a gun in their yard in the morning.
We collect latent prints and DNA from all guns we pick up.
