I recently bought a savage 301 single shot shotgun in 410 for squirrel season this year. I believe in comes with a improved cylinder win choke. I have very little experience with shotguns and exactly zero with interchangeable chokes.

I am looking for a full choke to install in the gun but nobody can seem to help me. The local gun shop says call Savage. Savage doesn't answer the phone and Brownells couldn't find anything to help me. Is there nobody who makes a 410 winchoke? Is there another choke that's compatible? Thanks in advance.

Have you patterned your gun at your anticipated range..?
It has been my experience that chokes in .410s are pretty ineffective.
.....not a huge difference in patterns between cyl and full chokes.
Just my $.02.

I only had 20 yards to work with at my local range and at that range it had a decent shot pattern but I fear beyond that the shot would be too sparse with #7 1/2.

a 410 shotgun is not for new shooters, I have a few friends who amaze me shooting skeet, they don,t seem to miss.

Well after repeated phone calls to Savage that only got as far as their answering machine and live chat with both Brownells and Midway I wound up no smarter for my efforts. Brownells and Midway must have moved their technical support overseas or something for all the help it was. So I fell back on my Google skills and found this https://www.trapshooters.com/threads/what-is-the-difference-in-winchoke-styles.786391/. It appears Win Chokes are interchangeable with Browning Invector chokes and Mossberg Accu Chokes. So I ordered one and will soon see.

Call Briley in Houston - they're the 800# gorilla when it comes to chokes, threading barrels for chokes, installing thin wall chokes, etc.

Seems we were both right. Win Chokes are the same as Browning Invector and Mossberg Accuchoke. And as you stated, a full choke doesn't seem to make much difference in the pattern.

That's what I found too. I had my quail gun honed to cyl .410 and still tore birds up.
I think the long slim design just lends itself to long tight patterns.

Full choke on a .410 will probably pattern worse than the IC choke you have with modern ammo. The restriction is too much and gives a pretty bad shot pattern.

And don't expect much more than 25-30 yard effective range from a .410, that might even be pushing it.

You are much better off with a 20 gauge if you are a newer hunter/shooter.

i had a savage stevens 301 turkey 410, it comes with an extra full choke and it was wonderful for squirrels. id suggest getting a turkey choke for it. ive seen many of them on amazon.

Yep, call Briley, Trulock or Carlson’s. I trust what they have to say more than any customer service rep at a shotgun manufacturer. I’ve never called Briley but I’ve called the other two on a number of occasions. Chances are you’ll talk to the company founders or one of the sons. If they don’t know the answer they’ll find out and get back to you.
