Has Anyone Here Tried Tannerite?

Every time someone brings tannerite it's bang... miss. Bang... miss. BanBOOM! Hahahaha... oh crap. Then we run to stomp out fires, etc. It's pretty legit explosive with all second order effects.

SHOCKED it is available OTC to regular nobodies still.

It will be until some meathead uses it stupidly or for terror purposes. Some jurisdictions may also have noise ordinances that prohibit use.

Not going to post how. But know the recipe is available online to make this stuff at home. It's out there 2 chemicals you can buy easily.

Son bought some a while back, figured the jars that came with the kit was a bit to big. So I saved my snuff cans for a bit and filled those and secured it with duct tape. That 2 inch diameter can creates a pretty big boom. Think I got like 10-15 snuff cans filled with the small kit. Strapped several to some small (6-8 in diameter) pine trees that were growing in my shooting range. Those small cans have enough boom to cut those trees down and if placed in the right spot, you dont have to worry about a stump above the ground. So along with some enjoyment, i got most the trees cleared from the range. win win :D

Well, guess what. Strike on anything matches are available in most grocery stores. Nip the heads off those matches and pack 'em in an empty Skippy peanut butter jar. Shoot at that jar from 50 yards and report back here what you find.
Even Granny can buy those matches, no questions asked.

Read somewhere that you can use match heads as an emergency primer compound for reloading rimfire cartridges but the article did not distinguish between the strike anywhere or the regular match compound. Believe it was about Russians reloading .22 LR during the soviet era.

If I do say so, I made a hell of a shot on a jar of Tannerite at about 125-130 yards with a mid-range loaded .44 240 gr SWC fired from my 629 Mountain Gun about two years ago...one sighter was lobbed in there a bit low and the next was a direct hit ...sadly all it did was break open the plastic jar and scatter the stuff all over the ground because it didn't have enough speed to set it off :(. (In all honesty I probably couldn't hit a jar like that again with 40 shots if I tried to duplicate it. o_O)

Later on I was able to hit a double-batch jar with the 6.5x55, that was a nice BOOM :what:. Tannerite is some pretty cool stuff.

Stay safe.

At one time it was unexpected when a TV gun show had the stuff or something like it hid behind a target
then every time = every day SUPRISE = no not any more.
Then some started adding, what looks like gasoline beside it or something, some shows even have the fire department
there to put it out.
I only use it for the 4'th of July with a Red White & Blue line to shoot at.

By the end of April, around these parts, the black bears are out and about from their winter nap:

Although the bird feeders are suspended from a "wire rope" 13 feet up, there always seems to be a couple of bears that are of the acrobatic sort, and still make attempts on a raid.
I've nailed a couple of off-set 2x4's from three trees near the feeders around 12 feet up the tree. Plan is to tape a suggested container of Tannerite on each 2x4. If I happen to catch a contemplating bear eyeballing the bird food, I'm thinkin' a shot at the Tannerite, just might give the raider some pause.

I go to a machinegun shoot couple times a year and Tannerite is always there. First time in attendance we took apart a couple washing machines, dryers, dish washers, fridges and freezers…just to keep things interesting a piano. I wish I would have had my phone to record it, that was EPIC! Last time we took out a half dozen trees (wanted to increase the width of the range.

This is one of the most famous cases of Tannerite misuse. This guy did not follow at least 3 of the safety instructions provided with Tannerite. Guys like this
are what will get it banned.

This guy is a idiot. You don't screw around with explosives. Not even a M80. And it will be banned one day. Luckily it's stupid easy to make.

Might also consider a propane cannon. Makes a very loud noise without tannerite. There are some DIY instructions out there.

Tannerite might get you into a bit of explaining if a game warden is around.

Yup! I'm with you. Anything and everything can be "over-done", and as I posted above, Tannerite is ripe for abuse, and I don't expect it will be sold much longer when more idiots are self amputating body parts.
I've seen what it will do in small amounts and in slightly larger amounts under controlled conditions, still there are always a few who think they are more "safety conscious" than all the rest us. Must be why we have magazine disconnects, loaded round indicators, and grip safeties, along with additional sear locking safeties.

Well, the "alternative" would get Mr. Warden even more excited. :fire:
Farmers and even cities use these quite a bit in in crop areas due to flocks of blackbirds and the like. They are rather distinctive.
Average folks don't like them but in the absence of noise ordinances can't do much.

Had a relative through my wife that was a long time game warden--he had no sense of humor and would hold hunters to the letter of the laws. One time another relative asked him at a family dinner, suppose I did such and such--believe it was something like I had already bagged two ducks and with my last shot I downed two more (one over the limit), would you arrest me if you saw it. The warden said absolutely. I suspect his supervisors got a lot of complaints.

I know what you mean concerning those carbide cannons. Many of the corn farmers near Horicon Marsh, here in Wisconsin use those to scare all the raiding geese off their fields. Funny thing is the geese get used to the "KABOOMS" and learn to ignore 'em.
A couple of years ago I removed one of the light bulbs in a two-socket motion light and screwed a two-prong plug in, in the socket. Then I hooked up an old boom box to the motion light fixture. When the bears came around to raid the feeders, the radio would come on full blast and the bears would beat feet back into the surrounding woods. That lasted only a few times, so either they became immune to the noise or they liked hearing the "rap music".

I have shot Tannerite on family property in the mountains. We had a empty plastic water tank the size of a 55 gallon drum and launched it several times into the air by placing a one pound charge under it and shooting it from a safe distance. Remote enough that the noise would disturb neighbors, weather humid enough there was no fire hazard.

Stick with the commercial trademark brand name Tannerite: it is formulated to be a binary mix target marker material, safe to handle and not suitable for demolition work. Mix it on site and shoot it the same day. Ammonium nitrate will draw water out of the air quickly. Do not store the mix.

Some of those homemade "tannerite" recipes are actually almost ammonal high explosive used in blasting. Avoid. Contamination can make ammonal unstable.

On a calm day, no wind at all and with bright sunshine, a bottle of selzer water on top of a pound of tannerite will sometimes get you a brief rainbow. Watermelons are fun, too. !!
