Ammo Stockpiles

When the world as we know it, comes to an end, some people will be ready.
Some will stock food and water or other items that will be needed. But if they can’t protect or defend their stash, the guy wit guns and ammo will take it.
But the guy with the guns and ammo will be sitting on a gold mine. With guns and Ammo, you will be able to protect and defend what is yours. Trade for what you want, or take what you want.
But the truth is, I’m not waiting for the end of the world, just retirement. I have no plans to work after I retire next year, just going to spend a lot of time shooting.:)

I built a 30x60 shed for my "stuff".

Mine was a bit more modest because of setback rules and where I wanted it on my property. My biggest problem was once it was done, my wife came poking around asking where her stuff was going. Mission accomplished....

I simply keep a level on hand that equals what I plan to shoot for the next eight years. Then restock as used. Mostly rimfire and reloading components. I think of it as a hedge against shortages and cost increases. I only buy on sale and in quantity whenever possible. YMMV

The presses have been busy. ;) Do you ever sleep?
About five hours a night.:)
I do need to pick up some more ammo cans. I hope that PSA put the Blackhawk cans on sell again with free shipping.
I’m not sure which I will order next, more 9mm, 45 Auto, or 22Lr. Or I could make it easy and order a case of each.

That’s the plan. Updated pic of most of my ammo stash.
Pistol and 22 ammo in the closet and rifle and shotgun ammo in the regular storage area. And there’s more in a few other places.

Those military ammo boxes do stack nicely!

As far as the "world coming to an end as we know it", it would take an army to defend a sizable ammo cache and most of us don't have that many friends that are willing to risk their lives for some ammo. Food, yeah, important.

You still have to keep in mind your purpose in amassing a sizable ammo cache. I do like a bit of ammo stored and available to me. The only caliber I went over board on was 22LR and sometimes I question my sanity in that regard. Not buying any more LR ammo unless it is target grade. If I do, it probably will never be shot as I have a pile of the stuff already.

Well I was inspired by @GunnyUSMC and brought not just one, but two 50 caliber surplus ammo cans. That should keep me busy this winter filling them up.

p.s. This just occurred to me. When I was at the Gun Show Saturday the dealer I get my surplus ammo cans from had a good supply of 30 and 50 caliber on hand. I did not get around to buying any then as I got pressed for time. We went back on Sunday and he had sold all of his 30 size and only had eight 50 caliber cans left. Now I can’t believe @GunnyUSMC came to Kansas but now I am not so sure.

Well I always thought 1k was a nice goal to hit, then I hit it, and decided that 2k was the next goal.

The problem for me is if I get too focused on stockpiling, the less I want to shoot it, and the more stingy I get with how much I take when I do go shoot. I don't like this though, as the whole point of stockpiling is so I can always shoot as much as I want in a single session at the range, or I'll have enough to take a training course if need be.

But since getting into reloading, the only fully assembled cartridges I buy now are .22, 12ga, and 7.62x39.

I'll I know, is that I'll never have enough ammo. Except for maybe 12ga...

For me 1,000 factory rounds per caliber is pretty doable at least with the guns I like the most. I cover the other calibers with reloading components (brass and bullets).

What gets me into trouble is having 1,000 rounds per gun. I am keeping up with .223 and 5.56 as I have slowly building AR’s which allows me time in between builds to get ammo. With other guns I will never accomplish that quantity which is why reloading is so important to me.

p.s. is anyone noticing how the “H” word is no longer being used. Somehow I think it will be back in use on THR when the next shortage occurs. (H of course means hoarding).

I have far more components than I do rounds. I only keep about a thousand of each caliber loaded at a time, and that's across multiple loadings. I have the components to make a few more thousand of each caliber. I guess I should consider stockpiling 10,000 bullets and corresponding powder but I'm hesitant to stockpile powder as it does expire, even loaded.

In a situation where I could no longer purchase ammo I think I have enough components on hand to remain shooting for generations even with a few thousands. If I can't buy new components, I can't shoot publicly either. I don't need 10,000 rounds in such circumstances, it's likely a single magazine would do and a few thousands would certainly suffice.

It’s not 100 but it’s getting there. Here are some of them. This is my 22LR safe. I can’t fit all of them in it. I do need to order a lot more 22 ammo so that I can have 1000 rounds for each gun.

Stack 'em higher and deeper. 22's are my first love. I do have bigger stuff, but the thrill of significant recoil has passed me by. I shot 41 mag and 480 Ruger a lot as I hunted with these revolvers. But the hunting stopped, so other than occasional shooting, they don't get shot much now.

I still have 22 rifles waiting for scopes. And of course, if I see something that grabs me, it comes home too. In particular I want a CZ with real nice wood in 22 mag. Purpose? Not much in reality.
