Savage axis in 308 vs Mossberg Patriot in 308

For what use? Chambered in what? The Mossberg is a better rifle but will be heavier. If I were carrying a lot and shooting a little, the Savage would have the edge. Otherwise the Mossberg. In harder recoil cartridge, the Mossberg might win even in a carry context.

My main uses are going to be deer and hog hunting from a ATV
Shooting nuisance coyotes
Light plinking
Also I'd like a rifle in 308 cause of the attractively cheap fmj ammo and the option to take large game with soft points.

Liiiiiiike what?

I considered the Mossberg before I bought my Savage, they are both worthy rifles. I like my Savage, however, the one thing I would ding the Savage on is the proprietary.... and somewhat expensive... magazines.
There are multiple problems with the magazines ,trigger guards, trigger, stock, and other thinks list is pretty long for the axis.

The cost of mags is my single biggest gripe with Savage. My guess is whatever they save on the rifles they add to the price of the extra mags, and I like to have 2 or 3 spares. One of the nice things with the T/C Compass is the mags can be found for about half the price of what Savage mags usually run.

I guess it depends on how you define problem, but the Axis is what it is, a budget gun built to a price point. The consensus seems to be it's a good rifle for if you need something you don't want to worry about beating up or if you just want a cheap no-frills rifle that will reliably go bang (and have accuracy above its pay grade).

Lots of people love them, and plenty of people have their gripes too, but overall they seem to be liked for what they are.

Things breaking are the problem.

I’d go with the Mossberg too over an Axis. The most important reason is I believe they are better quality. Second is I detest tiny ejection ports ala the Axis, American, and 783. Last is because I don’t care for AccuTriggers and their clones.

I’ve never in person seen, much less handled a T/C but on looks alone would rather have a Patriot. I’ll also state I feel the same way about T/C bolt action rifles as I do about the .308 cartridge, I have an irrational dislike for them.

Depends on how much you are spending.

If $200-$300: I would probably try to find a ruger american at $300 and would look at compass as well. I would probably choose the patriot over the axis and this is coming from a Savage fan.

If $300-$400: Remington 700, Savage 11, or Howa.

Axis has a weird bolt handle, bad trigger that I've read has sintered engagement parts so it really shouldn't be stoned, a very wonky recoil lug making stock changes more difficult, a horribly flimsy stock. It also has a dbm with a very cheesy design. This same mag is shared throughout the savage lineup unfortunately.

most rifles these days are accurate, and dependable enough for most tasks.

Personally having handled a good number of axis and a few Patriots, I'll take a patriot over an axis pretty much every time. there's nothing on the patriot that I immediately went "well that's gotta go" and a few things on the axis.

The TC looks like a really good buy, and it's one of the few lower cost...well current production rifles really....I have zero experience with.

Mauser m18s are also on sale at eurooptic, and Ruger Americans were going for about 300 in standard format as well.

One rifle I almost never see mentioned is the Winchester XPR. They generally get good reviews. I’d prefer an XPR over an Axis II, Ruger American, Remington 783 and T/C Compass. I would take a Patriot over a XPR simply because of the difference in size between the two of their loading/ejection ports. Teeny tiny whiny ejection ports don’t seem to be an issue for most people and I believe that’s a good thing because it certainly gives a person more choices.

Like LoonWulf I’d take a serious look at a Mauser M18 with the price they are selling for at Euro optic. Someone also mentioned the Marlin XS. I’d take a hard look if I ran across some new old stock.

If Mauser offered the M18 in .223, I probably would own one since that's what I was looking for my last purchase. I ended up getting a Weatherby Vanguard and like it, but would have picked up a Mauser in a heartbeat.

EDIT: Looks like they may have added .223, though they don't seem to be in the wild yet, much less at Europtics prices.

We have four Vanguards in the family. I prefer them over the M18.

Ya, honestly I would have picked up the Mauser primarily due to name recognition. They definitely have a solid reputation, and I'm a WWII buff so just the name Mauser makes me a little giddy for obvious reasons.

Well I for one hate the Mossberg Patriot! There, I said it, and here’s why; a local shop is clearancing them out, with walnut stock and Vortex 3-9 at $300. I just don’t need one at any price yet I keep wandering back to look. To date, I’ve taken home a Browning BuckMark and a Nikon Tactical 1.5-4.5x at $295 (combined) and I’m STILL thinking I could find a use for a Mossberg or 3.

I was and am a bit wary about small ejection ports, stiffer action or not, but I sprung for both a Compass and a Predator despite my nail biting, both of which have been trouble-free in optimal conditions.

Now that I’ve added an RDS to the Browning and Beretta the idea of picking up a MkIV Target/Laminate for under $400 has me tempted to take a third look at the Patriot. Darn Mossbergs are costing me a small fortune!
