Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

I got out to the range today, had to leave work early to keep the sunlight, and as it was I had to staple up some cardboard to shade the scope and my face so I could see the target well.

Conditions were good for shooting groups, pretty calm. I shot a five shot group with 31.7 Grs of N-140 (Lower left) and a five shot group with PR StaBALL 6.5 (Lower right)

I told myself at least twice not to set the targets down and forget them, but I still did, so I used the old one from last time when I shot the varied charges of both powders. (Top left and right targets) Seen on previous page. Pg 34. Post 837.

The N-140 load shots were:
2936
2936
2936
2940
2930

Hi=2940
Lo=2930
Avg=2936
ES=13
SD=4

A small sample, but looks good.

The PR StaBALL 6.5 shots were.
2911
2927
2923
2923
2976

Hi=2976
Lo=2911
Avg=2932
ES=65
SD=25

Poor group and poor ES & SD numbers. More pressure might tighten it up, might not.

Primers on the N-140 load showed some firing pin flow and slight ejector cutout marks on the brass. Shot well, but a little warm.

I went back and looked at the 32.5 & 33.0 Gr N-140 primers from earlier tests with 31.0, 31.5, 32.0, 32.5, & 33 Grs of N-140.
I missed the slight marks from the ejector cutout because the primers looked so good with much less primer flow. I tumbled those vs wiping lube off on the five shot test at 31.7 Grs.

A new pic of the 32.5 & 33.0 Grs of N-140 cases.

I paid some more on the MPA CCR 6 Creed rifle Friday, owe $1400. I have dies, once fired Hornady brass from 108 Gr ELD match ammo, have the sizer set up for now, need to fire a couple in the new rifle when I get it for final setup. I am going to try the Winchester PR StaBALL 6.5 powder in it first. I have some Berger 105 Hybrids, have considered getting some 108 ELDs and maybe some 107 Sierras to try, dunno yet.

Since the 1000 yard range is closed until March, and the other range only goes to 100, I got out the 22's and played with a 55 FMJ/Trailboss load.

23.5 yards (I accidentally set my target a little closer than I thought, was going for 25:eek:) Measured afterward with the rangefinder.

Bottom two groups are 55 FMJ/trailboss. Interesting that the gun is zeroed at 100 and holding dead-on at 23 came pretty close.

I'm guessing the 55gr/Trailboss loads are out of a .223 of some kind?

i was kinda wondering that myself. i've used trailboss for subsonic loads with 100g projectiles in 223rem but can't imagine you could stuff enough of it in a case to make a decent 55g supersonic round

I guess I should have clarified. The 55/TB load was shot in a 223, and I am doing the 70% case fill as recommended, which turns out to be 5.5 grains. It is definitely supersonic as I can hear the crack but I have not measured the velocity. My guess would be 1500 FPS from a 22" barrel.

right. why would you want a 1500fps round when most 55g are at least 3000 fps?

Quieter, fun load for the youth or female friend, safe on steel closer than 100 yards, affected more by wind than a 3000fps round.

Yes, I can do all of this with a 22LR but I wanted to do it in a centerfire.

Not that this is a PRS competition thread, but since the 2019 Season officially ended TODAY, what plans do folks have for next season?

Looks like we have new shooter classifications coming next season, supposedly more details to come in the next few weeks post the Finale. Looking at the class assignments of several shooters at various levels - without info from Shannon yet on how they’re ACTUALLY defined - I don’t think it really influences much of anything, other than a sort of participation award for us underlings to feel some “achievement” shooting big 2 day matches. Maybe my assumption will be proven incorrect, pleasantly surprising me with a real structure...

I’d like to shoot some matches again but work and family stuff prob won’t let me shoot enough to be competitive. Plus I’m going to spend a lot of time with the carbine and pistol this year.

I’m planning more of this for 2020 as well. I didn’t shoot any action pistol or 3 gun in 2019, wanting that back next year. We have an indoor 3 gun club here in town which shoots with PCC’s and buckshot, looking forward to building another AR9 and picking up a Ruger PCC (as good of excuse as any, right?).

I'm enjoying mine. Fighting the urge to do "load development" for it. That would defeat the purpose and spoil the fun. Went to the range yesterday, set up on the pistol lane and plinked steel until I was out of ammo (I got the 50 round drum mag). Grinned all the way home

I told my wife to make room in the storage room - when I finally get my PCC this spring, I’m going to order one of those half drums of 9mm and blast until it falls apart. There’s just so much fun in a 9mm carbine.
