New York hunters

Went out hunting with pat and his brother this afternoon, at his daughter's place. We drove woods at the top of a pasture after sitting in the open watching the fields. On my way down I kicked 5 out heading toward his brother, they exited 1, 3 then 1. I got to the bottom and saw 2 which circled into my life e of sight. I shot at one moving and missed it was headed straight at me. At the shot they both stopped giving me the opportunity to shoot the lead deer.

Had a quartering shot which hit low shoulder, breaking the shoulder, blew out the heart and exited the opposite rib cage.

I used my m11 savage in 223 firing 60 gr nosler partitions, federal premium bullets. The deer went about 25 yds.

I saw the hit it nearly knocked her over. When she recovered I saw her leg dragging, but it took a while to find her there was almost no blood to trail. Found her in a small depression behind a downed tree.

Thanks pat it was a great time.

Nice Brent, must be good woods over there. Now you need to use the ar to get a deer.

I had the AR with me but decided to use the savage. I figured that the 50mm objective lens on my Leupold would be better in the woods than the peep sight near the end of the day.

Did the partition pass through.

Yes it went through left shoulder and out ribs on right side about half way up the rib cage. The partition did a lot of damage to the vitals.

No problem troy, wish you were hunting with us today. They have a cabin in the woods they don't use that I could get for a deer camp but it isn't prime location for going where we hunt. But it is available and free. If it is something you guy want we can put our efforts together and get it set up. If it happens i'd like to have everyone donate $50 to give to them for the use of it.
I will get pics next time hunting there and get the key to take a looky lou. It would be our first deer camp.

Walking in to where I.like to stand i was thinking it would be nice to have some whote camo today.
Problem solved.

I have a paper towel over my scope and an empty peanut M&M wraper over the end of the barrel.
We have close to four inches of snow on the ground and expected 12 to 16 inches total.

During the last goal weather this season I used my gloves to cover my muzzle and scope.

Need some tape over your muzzle. The scope caps pay for there selves on these days.
I have those on my 4-16 monarch, installed the leup 3 weeks before the season. I'm sending the monarch in for service.

I have to order a few sets of caps one day. For the ruger my Browning and my new mauser. I am going to try to save up for a stainless rifle this year. I'd like to get a kimber of a ss Winchester. It seam we are getting snow earlier every year, and I don't like bringing some guns out in that stuff.

I just put in some back strap on the oven, on a bed off onions. Sounds crude but always tastes good. I made that larger deer roast at my dads in the smoker it came out very good. Hope I can get out tomorrow or Wednesday.

How's the snow down your way? We got 14" last night and are supposed to get another 4-8+ by tomorrow morn. Not going to be able to get to our spot ,most likely.

We got like 3-4 of sleet last night, but over night no snow. It just started to snow at about 12 today. maybe 4-5 now.

I'm hoping to MAYBE get out this coming weekend. I wasn't able to get out at all on Thanksgiving, Saturday or Sunday. The little one has been a fuss butt and keeping us up. She wouldn't go down untill 2 am on Saturday night.

Between loosing our main spot ,no tree stands, no scouting pre season due to a busy year, lack of action in the woods, a new kid and little sleep, and chasing a lost buck for 8hours, my hunting motivation is about zero at this point.

Hoping to exclusively handgun hunt next year and do alot more scouting pre season if time permits like we used to. Dad,brother and I are planning to hit the range once a week to practice with handguns to hone our skills.

Got at least 12 here after freezing rain and sleet. It's still snowing here.

I remember the days of being up all night with the children. It does get better though.

Don't feel too bad about not scouting, I didn't to either. I completely missed fall turkey season due to working. That is usually when I do my scouting.

It has worked out pretty well so far though. The area of state land I hunt produced a decent spike horn in the same location that I've gotten 4 others. The patterns are similar on that land from year to year.

Is your main spot still open to you. I'm takingvit that you hunt with your father and brother. Maybe they could scout for you and set you in a good spot, or build a stand. I have done it for my brother.

It might help your motivation to choose a different firearm to get out with or get together with a few other hunters.

I'd love to use a handgun to hunt deer here. It sucks New York doesn't recognize out of state pistol permits. I have permits for my home state of Washington, non-resident permits for Pennsylvania, Florida, Arizona, Oregon and Utah. When these are about to expire I will add a few more states.

I bought a sh!+ load of handguns for deer hunting here if they ever pass the national resiprication BS.
I have four Ruger Redhawks, a 7 1/2" - 44 magnum Super Redhawk, a older style 7 1/2" 44 magnum Redhawk, a 5 1/2" 41 magnum Redhawk and a 7 1/2" 357 magnum Redhawk.
I bought a 10" stainless 44 magnum Ruger New Model Blackhawk.
A stainless 357 magnum Ruger GP100.
A blue 357 magnum S&W 586 with a 4" barrel and a 6" barrel,
A stainless 357 Magnum S&W 686.
And several other revolvers.
I picked up a Glock 20 in 10mm.
Then I bought several T/C Contenders and a T/C Encore and have been matching up the pistol barrels calibers with the rifles I have.
I hope it happens before I die.
I have close to forty handguns. When I cash in my chips my kids and grandsons will inherit some nice firearms.

Hopefully the main spot will be deemed a wild life management area by next season so we can hunt it again. Down side is no tree stands other than climber are allowed in WMU's.

My old man "camps" in schroon lake everyweeked from may to late September/Early October every year for the past 20 or so. So he relies on my brother and I to scout, do trail cams and hang stands. This year was just super busy for all of us, so didn't have the extra time to get out and set cameras . Our lease expired in July anyways ,had to have our stands removed by the end of June.

But I think you're right about using a new type of fire arm to hunt with to help drive motivation. Looking forward to taking my first deer with the handgun. Up to the point I've carried a handgun and a rifle but haven't had any opportunities present themselves to take a deer within my abilities with the handgun. Major limiting factor being iron sights and not the greatest vision. Have a vortex venom on its way to mount on my Blackhawk for next season. Had the cylinder throats reemed out last spring to shoot hard cast, so she should be good to go out to 50 yards comfortably.

I'd like to do more Turkey hunting this year.

I'd like to get out as well, it will have to wait till spring. Of course howmuch I get out depends on work schedule and the noon time limitations.

wish we could use a cap and ball revolver, I still want to get a colt walker. Don't think I will hunt bp this year, I don't have any bullets for my inline 50cal or the proper round ball for my 15ga smooth bore.

I love those walkers. 50 gr powder charges like shooting a muzzle loading rifle. I used one for reenactments for a while.
We can use c&b pistols during regular gun season provided it's on your pistol permit. I hunted with mine for a while.

Funny story one year I was hunting Saunders farm in west Windsor with several others. I took my 1858 New Army rem. It was third weekend of season and had seen 4 does move through the same spot at the same time the past 2 weeks. So I set up and waited. About 10:00 they be thrpugh stopped at 25 yds broad side. I eased that 8 in hot leg out of its holster, drew a bead, cocked the hammer and squeezed the trigger.....

My pistol went pop. The deer took off running.

There was no boom. Just a pop. For some reason the nipple had gotten plugged and the main charge didn't ignite..

Sure was exciting though. Put the thrill back into the hunt.
