Just a question to ponder.

Over the past several years I have accumulated a few suppressors. I've even built a few on Form 1s. I don't have any intention to sell any of them, but at some point I began to wonder if it's really feasible to sell a used can.

I've never seen a used can for sale, so I'm wondering if there are any market forces or legalities that make it too difficult or undesirable to sell or buy a used can.

You can sell a commercial produced can for sure, but finding someone to pony up money and then wait out the paperwork might be difficult. They have to trust you and you have to trust them to not flake out during the process. And for the money involved for a can it probably isn't worth it. For something high dollar like a machine gun you could use an escrow service, but the fees would be too great for just a can. I would buy a used one if I knew the person well.

Excellent points. I have a close circle of friends where that would be an option, and they could even shoot it during the wait time if I was present and still plausibly in possession, but they can do that already without having to buy it. Besides, who would want to pay for the tax stamp on a used can?

yeah a stamp on a used one kinda feels like a waste, unless it is a smoking good deal on something expensive. And I believe that is why the NFA exists. To limit the transfer and ownership of cool toys...

Exactly. I guess if I found a thousand dollar (new) suppressor that a buddy was selling for half that, at most, then it might be worth while. But I'd have to really want that particular model for some reason.

The used suppressor market isn't very good because it's a double-stamp, double-wait process unless the sale is intrastate.

Machine guns go through this process all the time due to their fixed supply and astronomical market values, but other NFA items are pretty much worth squat because of it.
