California Illegal Hunter Gets $20,000 Fine

CORRECTION....

California POACHER gets $20,000 fine...

We need to be very careful that we don't let the asshats in the press use the word "hunter" in a headline when it's a poacher, as that then over time paints all of us who hunt as less than honest people, without a qualm about violation of game laws simply because we're greedy. (imho)

Unfortunately, the last line of the linked articles rings the most true.......“for a lot of those people that commit poaching crimes, it’s kind of a way of life for them.”.

Sorry but I think it's excessive. I'm not at all condoning it but people do a lot worse and get a lot less. It'd be different if they were endangered but there are more deer in the US now than 100yrs ago. Around here they're thick as flies. A $500 fine is more than enough to punish offenders and discourage others. Twenty grand is making a statement and that's a hell of lot more than the POS's that broke into our new house two weeks before our wedding got. Lifetime criminals, one of whom was shot a couple months ago for his nefarious activities. The lunatic left is far more willing to punish harshly for something like this than REAL criminals.

While I'm glad he was caught and punished I also think $20K is too much for the crime. Looks like an anti hunting judge based on where it came from. While that was a "nice" deer, it isn't a trophy book animal. The guy basically "stole" the animal from the citizens of California and the punishment should be based on the value of what he took from the state. I could see $20K for someone illegally taking a big horn sheep or moose in places where getting a tag is a once in a lifetime opportunity and the state could claim they lost $20K from license and outfitter fees to pay for someone to hunt that animal. Most of us would think $20K excessive for a rabbit taken out of season. I don't see this as any different.

I agree. Way too many real criminals out there but since they don't have money, they get off easy.

I watch quite a few Game Warden shows onTV and notice that they get more lies that you'd think possible from people that have broken the law. It seems to me that Californians, as opposed to residents of other states, really thumb their nose at the law. Can't say I have any sympathy for any of them regardless of where they live. With that said I've seen some hefty fines but never approaching $20K so that does seem excessive however if it keeps other from poaching then it may be well served.

i don't think it's too much. This comes under the heading: Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

Few years ago a guy who poached in Oklahoma for decades got caught spotlighting. The guy had a court case pending for taking a 12 point in velvet deer to the taxidermist.

His firearm was confiscated, his new Dodge diesel pickup was confiscated and he was barred from hunting in all states in the compact. A game warden drove that truck for years.

Bad enough after the season while on his own land, but the baiting aspect, IMO, really nailed him.................personally, I agree that deer should be a fair chase deal, not a "bait and wait"

He is NOT an illegal hunter.

He is a low life poacher, a thief, scum bag, cheat but he is nothing that belongs in the same sentence with "hunter".

Does this guy have a history or reputation of poaching? $20k seems high but if this guy has been at it for decades and this what they finally caught him on they might be trying to make up for all the times he wasn't caught. Way I hear it these types are already known to be up to no good in the local community and just a matter of catching them with something that will stick.

And you think shooting a deer out of season is reason enough to ruin someone's life? What's next, a firing squad for speeding?
To me, there are different levels of poaching. One is shooting wild game out of season. The other is trophy animals.
Poaching is a way of life. Just like being a thief.
I'm all for increasing or enforcing penalties on all criminals.
I also feel the death sentence is viable for people that are repeat offenders or took someone's life while committing a crime.
