M1 garand

I recently got a 1943 dated m1 garand with what my research says is the "correct" stock cartouche for a 1943 springfeild armory made stock, but their is no spot for the cleaning kit. Does that mean this is a reproduction stock someone faked the cartouche on or were stocks made without the cleaning kit hole drilled? I got the rifle in shooting condition for $800 so I don't really care, I was just curious.

I would think that if someone was going to fake the cartouche, then they would go all the way.

Possibly yours missed that manufacturing step, and slipped by the inspectors. They were churning them out pretty fast in those days.

Does the stock look and fit like 1943 wood? Do you have any later examples to compare against? Repro/ Fake cartouches are around.

It’s unlikely IMO that a GI stock made it past inspection without a hole for the cleaning kit. But I may be wrong.

My field grade M1 was not drilled and has no markings. It's hackberry wood . What kind of wood is your stock made of?
(I think "field grade" is the proper term for one step below "service grade.")
The Gunny helped me re-finish my hackberry stock here on THR.

Which means it’s not a GI stock, which is what the OP is inquiring about.

Post a pic, that is a substantial 'miss' if it's a factory error.

Which would be rather substantial as they would have missed boring two holes in the stock blank. If memory serves, those were separate machine steps, too.

The early gas trap M-1s did not have a place for the cleaning kit in the butt and no access door on the butt plate. Does your butt plate have the door?

So after taking her shooting for the first time and looking at her in daylight I noticed the stock is much lighter in color and newer looking than the hand guard. It is definitely a different kind of wood too. But I guess I can't complain for 800 dollars. She was by far the cheapest m1 at the gun show.
