Way I look at it, all the little goodies aren’t necessary, but can stack the odds in your favor.
Does face camo help? Not always. Sometimes yes, sometimes not.
Do you have to use scent control? Sometimes yes, sometimes not.
Few years back, I had a big gobbler cross at 62 yards. He was angling and wasn’t coming any closer. I got him DRT with my 10 gauge, custom choke, and expensive Hevi-Shot. Your typical lead slinging 12 gauge would most likely not reach that far.
I guess it’s all about stacking your odds. Can you kill a deer with a 12 gauge slug? Sure, millions have been taken. But, I’ll use my 7 mag since it’s legal and I have a range of 300 yards instead of 50 or 100 yards.
Couple turkey seasons ago, I took my best friends boy hunting for the first time. He brought a 16 gauge with a poly choke and lead shot. According to most here, we “cheated” and used a blind. I called in a bird that wouldn’t come closer than about 45-50 yards. I handed him my 10 gauge, and he got his first bird at about 20-30 minutes into the season.
David killed Goliath with a sling, but that doesn’t prove it’s the optimum weapon
