Hey all,
Cruising around gun broker I found a marlin 336 in 30-30, made in 1975... The current bid is over $10,000, why?!
It has over 100 bids and I don't see anything special here. What am I missing??

I’m gonna say it’s money laundering…

Cuz if that’s a real deal, I have a couple 336’s from the ‘70s which were my wife’s father’s and uncle’s, and both men would - without question or pause - approve our sale of their heirlooms at that price.

Reading that ad, it appears he is a scheister… “Marlin is out of business and this will never be made again,” “NOS condition, based on my assessment in looking at the boltface and [blah blah blah],” “JM built by Marlin at the peak of quality, not Remlin…” It’s all BS.

So yeah, it’s either real bidders smoking crack, or it’s money laundering.

IMO anyone who bids for firearms in an online auction is a gambling addict or misguided. By the time you "win" an auction and pay all the add-ons, you haven't won anything.

Make a fair offer and let it go at that.
Am NOT! Well not misguided usually.....

Bidding on stuff can be fun, and sometimes you can get good deals, but that up there.......thats special

“Mint” would be the key word. How many New Old Stock 1975 rifles have you seen lately? How many of those are out of production? How many of those are known to be quality firearms? How many of those are collectible?

As you go through each question that you can say “yes” to, the price of the firearm goes up!

Since ‘user’ 336’s are going for close to a grand, I can see one like this bringing a LOT more!

Mine has genuine mint patina so that makes it even more valuable, maybe I should up that price a little and no CBS either! That is worth some extra. Dang, I think I set my price too low ;) .

Personally I wouldn't consider any 336 that has a scope on it as New Old Stock or Mint. At minimum that means the original plug screws are probably missing and the scope base has left marks in the top finish.

There's been some speculation over on the Marlin Owners forum that the price has something to do with the scope which apparently is from Belarus.

ebay has some Thompson Contender barrels for almost a grand each...sure they are in original packaging...but is it worth it?

Are you willing to pay? Is it worth it to you? That is the question.

I don't know what they go for so I have no perspective .

Do you know that the major sellers have bots that inflate the bid price into a range and then quit bidding?

This is probably a case where algorithm went haywire.

I wasn't aware of that, just thought maybe there was something I didn't know that could make a 336 extremely valuable .

I'd be surprised. Looking around I've found that scope listed for sale a few times in the past on a couple sites, and it has never sold for more than $100 that I've seen. Maybe current events might affect the price, but I can't imagine by THAT much.

I can understand paying a premium for older Marlins. Before they were bought by Remington and then Ruger. But not for 10,000. That is just lunacy. It does look in great shape. Probably hasn't had a full 20 round box fired through it.

I noticed this one several days ago when the bid was $1500 and have been following it ever since.
It’s not the scope because he doesn’t even mention the brand.
Makes no sense at all.

Do you understand how gun auction sites work? There’s no gambling to it. You put in a bid, if you win the auction, you pay your money and you get your product. No money is lost if you don’t win. Yes, sometimes extreme prices are seen on products, just as happens with home auctions, horse auctions, car auctions, etc… when someone wants something and is willing to pay a price, the price gets paid and they get what they want. But there’s no gambling and certainly no money sacrificed to the odds if a bid isn’t won. This claim is just silly.

I see people say this a lot, do you have any proof or data or are you just repeating something you heard that sounds good?
Cause I'm good at thinking outside the box and have questions.
is GunBroker in on it do they refund fees when the bot wins?
Seems like a big risk for a little reward.
Do several vendors get together use the same bot?
Because I went into the feed back of the 2nd place bidder and he's purchased from other vendors.
Or do you think these vendors buy a bunch of high priced stuff on the off chance they can get a bot to get the mark to bid a bit more?

I’ve gotten offers on merchandise I was selling in non-auction forums of 10x my listed price. Always some scam, always wanting it shipped, always with suspect grammar. In an auction, the bid would need be removed or rejected by the seller if possible, but what’s to prevent a 10 year old from typing any amount imaginable?

I couldn’t pinpoint what is going on with that particular auction except to say that many of us are oblivious to underhanded schemes and we should strive to give them a wide berth. Money launderer, rich fool, or Nigerian Prince’s Esquire; none are my concern nor do I research how to avoid them. That part is simple.

I would easily pay $400 for such a rifle so rest assured I’m not the bidder.
