.223 Bolt Options...

Since I'm so heavily vested in this caliber already [.223] I'm motivated to acquire a bolt action rifle chambered in it.

Some criteria.
It has to be inherently more accurate than any of my gas operated MSRs, otherwise whats the point? Im thinking it shouldnt be a hard ask.....Currently am about 1 MOA at 200 yds with my Colt HBAR, and that's shooting from a bipod. I believe from a lead sled it would shrink a bit more yet.

Would have to be easy to throw on a sling and carry in the field. I'm just not interested in an uber bulky target rifle.
It can have a bull barrel, but other than that I'd like it to be pretty plain jane.

Synthetic stock. It doesn't have to be a "looker" I'd also prefer carbon blued steel barrel. Stainless not required (unless for a reason)

I'd like it to have a barrel twist rate such that it's optimized to stabilize 69 to 77gr bullets. I have a lot of these projectiles on hand. (Here I am ONCE AGAIN looking for a firearm that's based off of what metallic components I have at hand, chuckle)
I would assume there are varmint guns out there with barrels optimized for lighter bullets, but this is just an educated guess on my part....I'm reflecting what I already know about ARs onto this prospect. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Barrel length, I'd like to keep it 20-22" I'd expect this is the norm anyways..

Lastly, it's a bonus if it has detachable box magazines. Uber bonus if it can accept 10 or 20 round AR mags (im sure this is a thing, just not sure how common) I've always loved modularity between equipment. I shoot a lot in cold weather and when testing loads, having mags ready to go is always a plus.

Oh yeah, and the budget....I'd spend up to 1,200$ but if I can get all I need from something that's 700$, then that's great.

If it's everything I need, but by some magic it accepts MSR mags, then I'd spend more.

Right now, Remington model 700 W/ box mags is pretty much what I'm thinking, buy let's hear what you all have to say.....
Thanks in advance.

I have a tikka t3x varmint gun 223 bolt action .

it seems to check a lot of your boxes on your list.

The heavier bullets shoot well out of that gun .

The twist is 1:8 on a 24 inch barrel

The Ruger predator in 223 takes AR mags
+1 My predator shoots around .7 moa at 200 yards with the right hand loads. You won't get that with factory ammo - in my rig anyway. The action is a pita but it shoots fine. I put a boyds stock on mine because I dont like plastic but it shoots about the same as with the oem on it. Just sets on the rest better and is balanced a little better on the bench.

About any bolt 223 will shoot better than the average gas gun.

My Ruger American is a nice shooter. 16" threaded and with a can and bluedot loads is movie level of noise (of course not a 300 yard round lol)

If I had a bigger budget I'd look at a Tikka or Sako.

What caliber are you using Bluedot in?

The predator is an 8 twist and shoots up to 77 smk fine. Use an AR Stoner metal mag and you can load a little longer - off the top of my head I think I'm loading 77s at 2.282 at 7 mils off the lands.

My rig came with a near sammi minimum chamber but I don't know if all come the same. Screw the die all the way to the shell holder and headspace is right at 1.5 to 2 mils - just right and I can run the same ammo through the ar w/o issue as long as they are crimped or not too long. You need to stay in 223 pressures or the primers get wasted though with the tight chamber and short freebore.

Currently the only 223/556 bolt action I own is a Ruger American Ranch Rifle. I has a 16" barrel and accepts AR mags. It shoots 1" at 100 yards with 55g V-Max bullets. Its also light and handy. Its also comparatively inexpensive. It shoots better than a Ruger Hawkeye I owned. It had either a 20 or 22" barrel. It also shoots better than Savage and Remingtons I have owned.

About the only other bolt gun in 223 I would consider is a Tikka. But I don't need it because the Ruger American is just so good.

I use 3031, a2230, ar+, or a little 4895 in my 223 loads. If I want quiet I just shoot 22lr std vel in a 22 semi auto or 200+grain bullets out of a bigger bore at 1100fps.

Since you likely have AR mags, a Ruger should do you. Either a Predator or Ranch, depending on how handy you want it to be. I'm not sure about the Predator, but the 5.56 Ranch has a 1:8 twist which is appropriate for the heavier bullets.

And of course, a Tikka is rarely the wrong answer.

You MIGHT get lucky and find a 1:9 that could stabilize a 77 , but if I was going to shoot those to any extent, 1:8 or faster to be on the safe side.

Remington 700 wins the popularity contest with tons of aftermarket support. The newer models have a 1:8 twist.

Tikka has a strong edge in accuracy, 1:8 twist, and would be my first choice.

Savage can turn out a decent gun but I'm not sure if a 1:8 or faster twist is available.

Howa and Ruger have 1:8 twist options.

Savage rifles in the Axis and 110 lines are 1:9`s. I have a 110 storm in .223 that`s a VERY accurate rifle that will shoot 60-69 grains. Never tried 70+ grains. I also have a Model 12 LRPV in .223 that`s a terrific target rifle with a 1:7 but doesn`t fit what the OP wants.

I have a Remington XR-100 chambered in 223 Rem. Once I replaced the trigger and free floated the barrel, it is quite accurate. I'm not sure if they are still in Remington's catalog, they are single shot, and off hand I do it remember the twist rate of my gun. I think I have it listed somewhere in my records.

But, knowing what I know today, I'd rather have a Savage.

Although, I do not have experience with Ruger, CZ, Howa, or any other bolt action centerfire rifles.

I've built several long barreled AR-15's that are quite accurate. I have a 24" 223 Rem, a 24" 17 Rem, and a 26" 204 Ruger. The 204 Ruger is my main prairie dog rifle but it tips the scales at 12-13 pounds and borders on being a "crew served" prairie dog rifle.

I'm taking a hard look at the Ruger Predator.....
Can't pick between moss green or the fde.
And also, considering just getting one with the Vortex Crossfire 4-12 x 40 already mounted. I should think that scope is more than sufficient for my needs.

I would skip the Chinese Vortex and grab a Burris from the Philippines. I really like mine, and for the price, you can’t beat it.
