Ruger No. 1 Tropical

I came very close, on several occasions, to buying that rifle with the intent of rechambering to .450 Nitro. I don't know of any other way to get that close to the grand old Farquharson dangerous game rifles without spending five figures.

Of course, that still leaves the question of "Why?" - or, from the wife's POV, "What the hell is wrong with you?!?" - but there you go.

Tl;dr: post #2 is the most perfect thing I have ever seen.

I have a 1955 Winchester Super grade African in .458 Win Mag. I had until the after math of a 1992 divorce an Army and Navy cased .470 Nitro SxS made by a good solid English maker, Cogswell and Harrison ,in the late 1920s fully cased with accessories, and lightly engraved with nice wood ,and brought back to England before WW2 after living with a Major in Nairobi 10 years and not shot much. I more than doubled my investment of $5000 in 83 by 93 and shot a box of 20 Kynoch solids. it came with . The double kicked a little more than the equal 10 pound Model 70 .458 which is now more than enough for me. I load my .458 with 350 or 400 grain bullets at 2200fps for the 350 and 2050 for the 400 grain and that is the limit of my off hand comfort with the beautiful Express sights that hit right on at 50-75 yards . I have yet to shoot any game with it. I do have full on 510 grain at 2100 fps loadings and know what the easy to make sight settings are for them. I have 200 loaded rounds and brass at all times and shoot 45-70 and supressed .458 Socom and cast 400 grain bullets for all . No thanks on the Lott, I'll keep the full length cases for my three .375s !
BTW I had a few Ruger #1s and those Tropical ones are kickers IMHO .

If you ever got stranded on an island with big mean hungry brown bears it would come in handy. Works on real Russian Wild Boars also...

If you have a strong shoulder, some $$$$, and want it go for it. Suggestion - Don't mount the glass too close to your eye brow. 🧐

A friend had one. I think there is something about the No 1 that accentuates recoil.
Another friend had a Model 70 African. He tried loading it down to Trapdoor level but with Ball C powder. First and worst hangfires I have heard.

My cousin bought one back in the late 80s because he saw it for a good price. He kept it for a few years and then sold it....they don't have many elephants in Texas. I have his box of Speer 500-grain solid bullets.
