I have a question for those who have both AR and AK rifles.

Most of us already know the pros and cons of both, I happen to like the strengths of both.

If you had to bug out, Katrina type natural disaster or other, and could only take 1 of your rifle's and 500 rounds of ammo, which would you take your AR or AK?

Sigbear

Neither, the last thing I would want to do is attract unwanted attention. I would have a concealed handgun, important legal documents, water purifier, and cash.

My main concern would be access to potable water, not the type of firearm I was carrying.

Without a doubt it would be my AK between those two choices, however I would actually take my CZ vz58. As far as standing out in a crowd, I would want to send the message...Hey DON'T F... WITH ME. Its easier to stay out of trouble than to get out of trouble.

Boy this is definitely one of those can of worms type questions.

Things to consider would be are you going to be in a urban setting or in the countryside?

I would normally have said an AK for the reliability factor and the larger round if I am going to have to be taking game for survival.

However I just purchased a 5.56 suppressor for my AR's and would now take that. Being able to stay under the radar makes more sense. I also have a suppressed 22LR for small game as well. Better chances if nobody knows you are around.

I go with the AK. With a side folder, its small enough to hide under a loose shirt, but still instantly accessible and usable, even folded.

One of the easiest ways to stay out of trouble is to never look like a potential target or a potential threat. Being the much-slandered 'gray man' really does have advantages.

My AR.

Although I don't currently own an AK.

But give me $10,000 to blow on an AK and I'd still take my AR. They're good, and I certainly liked every one I had...I just run the AR platform much better.

That being said if there's some sort of disaster ALL my rifles are going with me...along with ALL my other guns. I have a car and it tends to work more often then not...so loading up the trunk and hitting the go pedal will get me where I need to go faster then walking.

Not that I'd go anywhere anyways, unless there's a flood...

Couldn't agree more. Not being noticed is the easiest way to stay out of trouble and keep your life intact. However, the OP asked which rifle he should take in such a situation. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt that he has already planned his E&E routes during such an event and found that he would feel more comfortable with a rifle on his back, so I won't try to dissuade the man. Personally Sigbear, I would feel most comfortable with my AK, simply because I have little faith in the 5.56x45mm round's ballistics. I'm not trying to start an argument about the round and its particular merits, but I want to be sure that the weapon I'm carrying will do what I want it to do. So whichever weapon system you feel most comfortable and familiar with: that is your bug-out gun.

AR, because I'm more accurate with it, spare parts are readily available, and most things that could break can be fixed with few tools. Don't dwell on "well MY AK never breaks," my ARs never break either.

I shoot an AR much better. Even if an AK is more reliable (maybe, maybe not), I'd still take an AR.

This would be more interesting if people stated what their AR was what accessories if any and the same for their AK. Not all AKs are the same and ARs are certainly not all the same either.

AR.

But I wouldn't be bugging out.
My place is where my city friends are going to bug out to.

I always wonder in these bug out threads, where are you bugging out to?

My comparable AR and AK...

An Armalite M15A4 (C) with and Aimpoint on a removable, cantilevered mount, as well as a set of BUIS that will cowitness to the dot.

An SAR1 (with or without a wire side folder) with an Ultimak rail and an Aimpoint, which also cowitness's to the dot.

Not all AKs are the same and ARs are certainly not all the same either.
I think the Ak's are closer to each other than the AR's. They all have pretty much the same trigger and will shoot about the same accuracy wise with ammo they like. Some may be prettier than others, but performance is very similar, regardless of cost.

The AR's on the other hand, vary wildly, especially as you get into the upper ends of the spectrum price wise. Stock or basic AR's usually have crappy triggers, and you need to spend more on add ons to get into the guns that start to surpass the AK's by any real margin.

I hope all that responded are also in good physical condition. Humping across the neighborhood with a rifle and 500 rounds would be a heck of a feat for 1/3rd of Americans if the statistics are correct.

I wonder how far you think some guy carrying and "assault rifle" would have gotten under Katrina conditions after the storm hit.

Bugging out BEFORE Katrina, I guess you could take whatever fits in the trunk of the car. If you have that much ability and foresight, you probably won't NEED either one.

I generally only lug a handgun when I'm "travelling."

I was in Houston when Katrina hit.

I would have been in my car with all those people at the Houston Galleria getting a hotel room, shopping and waiting the storm out. I would have had most of my guns in the car with me.

Actually, I would never live in a place as corrupt and ready for disaster as New Orleans. No matter where I lived, I would throw as many guns and ammo in the vehicle as I can.

If your questions is "What gun would you take if you had to WALK away from your house in a disaster?", I would probably grab a good concealed pistol or two - probably a 1911 and a 9mm, have every .22 I own along, and carry a simple lever action like a Winchester 94 or Marlin 336. I would prefer a "Trapper" - sized model, but I don't yet own one.

I shot 3 different M-16's while in the Army (I was a Medic in a hospital so didn't do a lot of shooting, unfortunately). These were government issue Colts, remember, and I had problems with all of them. I know that many different guys were shooting them and they may not have been maintained that well, but I GUARANTEE you my boot camp issue M-16 was CLEAN, CLEAN CLEAN...still had stovepipes and cases stuck in the chamber/failure to extract, usually after about 80 rounds or so.
My point is, I now have a WASR-10 that I have a couple thousand rounds through, and I have shot 300 rounds or so before cleaning it at times. The only malfunctions have been rounds failing to fire (bad ammo, all of it Wolf). Other than that it just keeps chugging. Not nearly as accurate as the ol' M-16, but it works. I'd take my WASR. 500 rounds would be a bit of a bugger, though...

I have M1As , AKs, and more then one AR ----- and that is the order that I rate them.
The .308 has the most punch/power BUT it is a little hard to do double taps with.
The .223 has the least recoil and you can carry more ammo.
The 7.62x39 is the best middle of the road between the two.

So if I HAD TO --- I guess it would be one of my AKs --- problem is , which one !!!!!
