Wow! Beautiful work.
This is also a 1/2 scale M16A1. It was not made to fire. But is exact right down to the detent pins.

Well, gonna be held up for a few days on further progress. Was cutting a new barrel nut with a smaller ID on the lathe and let the smoke out of my phase converter. WNY Supply is taking care of it, but I'll still be down for a bit.

Remaining to be made are:

-Firing pin
-Extractor
-Ejector
-Bolt catch
-Forward Assist
-Hand guard
-Forward hand guard retainer
-Front sight
-Flash hider
-Barrel

Once back up and running, I'll probably have everything but the barrel done in a couple weeks.

Barrel, of course, I still need to purchase, and I won't be cutting it to size until I hear back from ATF. Will probably make a mock barrel in the mean time, though.

I've seen those listed at Wayne Driskell Miniatures. Believe they were made by American Miniature Arms. They are accurate if one wants a mechanically functional display model of the M16A1, but I'm pretty sure they were made of cast brass, so not something that could ever be made to safely fire.

All parts are steel except the upper and lower, which are cast brass. The barrel has the bore but the chamber is not cut. They were made for display not fire.

So how long of a barrel would you need if BATF says "it's a rifle"?

16-3/4 to be a title I long gun.

The biggest reason I don't want to have to SBR the thing isn't the $200 or the wait; it's engraving. To meet the 3/16" character requirement, I'd basically have to engrave every flat surface on the lower :barf:

Your hand size must be close to mine. XXL with a 13 ring finger. It makes that miniature AR look even smaller.

I wear large gloves, 9.5-10 ring finger. Long, slender fingers and wide but thin hands. XL gloves fit my finger length, but are loose everywhere else.

So...if your forced to install a rifle barrel, might I suggest you turn one on a lathe to look like a military tapered barrel with a suppressor attached...it may not be "correct" but it would look more correct than what otherwise would appear to be a miniaturized 33 inch barrel.

There is no 3/16" requirement that I am aware of. Engraving must be a min .003 deep and the serial number must be at least 1/16". The other info only needs to be legible.

See sec 7.4 of:

Do a 1/2 scale S&W 1006 in 22 short, next :D

Oh, and there is such a thing as a marking variance from the ATF, which may or may not be able to accommodate this weirdo build (like have the upper classified as the "firearm," so you can engrave the barrel, or something).

I mean, how big was the font on this;

Or on the little lightning links & DIAS?

Maybe a 1004. Lol. Stainless is a pain to work with, and expensive.

Won't lie, though; I've given serious though to building a stainless 1:1 AR receiver. But I priced the block I'd need in AISI 420: $185, and that was a couple years back!

So engrave the barrel, and hide it under the handguard?

There's no requirement for the engraving to be visible... just on the gun... somewhere, right?

And... I haven't commented yet in this thread, but...

DAMN.

Just...

DAMN.

You got skill. :)

The "gun" has to be engraved. For the BATFE, that means the lower receiver. At least, that is my understanding of it when it comes to engraving ARs for NFA purposes.
