Proposed bill would let Ohioans carry concealed firearms without a permit

Representative Rod Hood of Ashville proposes that those who are 21 and over and not restricted by law. To be able to carry a firearm concealed without a permit. The article did not give the number of the bill of the proposal, or if it has been formally introduced yet. And no mention was made if this proposal only applied to Ohio residents. Maybe one of our Ohio members can provide additional information.

"The bill also would bar law enforcement officers from conducting “any search, seizure, or detention, no matter how temporary in duration, of an otherwise law-abiding person” with a firearm. Landlords also couldn’t bar tenants or their guests from having legal firearms. If the bill passes, Ohio would join five states, including Alaska, Arizona, Kansas, Vermont and Wyoming, that allow concealed weapons without a permit."

.

Ohio is evenly divided politically which is why it is a battleground state every presidential election. This has no chance of passing.

Every advancement we have made over the last ten years is like pulling teeth as our Republican legislators are constantly looking over their shoulders fearing the Dems are gaining on them.

It may pass. I'm a Democrat from rural Ohio and I'm all for it. I think Cleveland would be the only area where it would face a lot of opposition.

Even if it doesn't pass, it still puts the idea in public consciousness.

As far as Cleveland being resistant, you're right. I work in the city and live 40 miles from it. It is a seething cesspool of corruption, ineptitude and cronyism. Anything good will be resisted, anything that compromises the rights of citizens or funnels money from the populace to the city management is favored.

There was a permit-less carry bill introduced , (I believe in 2013, ) it never made it out of comity, I watched it for about a year and it never moved.

I live just outside of Cleveland, and yes it is a dump.

What a fine synopsis of big city America cesspools, We can easily add Philadelphia, Detroit, Washington, D.C, Los Angeles and San Francisco, Seattle,Miami,Atlanta, Baltimore, St.Louis and New York City.

There are many more. Add your own to this ugly fact of today's Urban America,

Thank you,1911 guy. You nailed our #1 domestic problem.

Detroit isn't as bad as you might think as far as being anti-gun. They have a Police Chief who believes in the right of the people to be armed.

Domestic cesspools was the focus of 1911 guy's post. Miami is not very anti-gun either, but it is a corrupt cesspool and has been since the 1930's. Detroit seems to be coming back to an extent after the Kwame Kilpatrick disaster.

Go Lions! :D

As an Ohio resident I'm all in favor of this bill. As a gun owner I find Ohio has been pretty good about moving towards better firearms law step by step.

Agreed. Just over a decade ago, there was no legal CCW in Ohio. Now we have a CCW law and it has been amended for the better, not once but twice.

The biggest obstacle to gun ownership in Ohio is "Home Rule", which allows municipalities to pass and enforce laws that restrict rights recognized by the State of Ohio. For example, in the fine city of Cleveland, it is illegal to own a handgun with detachable magazine that holds more than nine rounds. Ohio has no such law, but allows the city to enforce its own under this doctrine.

As far as Cleveland in particular, it has many things going for it if you're looking for entertainment. But what it contributes, it more than consumes in fraud, waste, socialist political influence and extortion of surrounding communities.

It appears that the Buckeye Firearms Association opposes this legislation.

Seems a little miffed that he was not consulted first.

Ken Hanson, legislative director of the Buckeye Firearms Association, said Ohio isn't ready for concealed carry without permits — a law that a few states have. Buckeye Firearms Association wasn't consulted before the bill was introduced, he added.

"I wasn't in the loop so I'm peeved".

Mr. Hanson, get over it and grow a set. Your prognostication regarding passage does not determine the merit or lack of. If likelihood of passage was the indicator of merit, tax hikes would be the epitome of awesomeness.

Just too cool! A great put down! :D The egos that float through this stratum! ;)

He is in favor of it because he knows just how undermanned and overworked his police force really is. 90% of the bad gun laws we have in this state is directly due to gun control proponents in Detroit. Thankfully, when the economy tanked, a lot of the riff raff got flushed away with it. Now that the city is somewhat on the mend, hopefully the residents, businesses, corporations and politicians learned a valuable lesson of what not to do.

I hope you guys in Ohio get constitutional carry. If you can get it, maybe we can, too.

I'm an Ohio native, and lived in that "battleground" state until I was in my early 20's. I now live in another swing state (Colorado). I'm glad to see that my homeland has made some good strides on 2nd Amendment issues in the past 12 years.

When I first moved to Colorado our laws were way ahead of Ohio's on gun issues. On the CCW issue we're still doing better out here. But, while things have been improving in the Buckeye swing state, they've been getting worse in Rocky Mountains.

Good luck with this bill!

Ohio has preemption under ORC 9.68 which has been in effect for 6-7 years. The Ohio Supreme Court found it constitutional about three years ago. So Home Rule gun laws are null and void.

Just a few years ago Kansas didn't have Concealed Carry, now we have not only that, but open carry and in a couple of months "permitless carry".

A lot of people in Kansas didn't think we would ever have any of that, and a lot of politicians of both parties worked hard to make sure we didn't! :( Fortunately, the voters and other politicians worked even harder and now we have them. :D

Never assume anything is impossible! It may be difficult, and it may take time, but it can be done.

There are now five States with Constitutional carry. With more time and experience with it, the less the proponents of gun control can argue that it is crazy and dangerous.

You may not win this round, maybe not the next, but keep fighting for it! it is a winnable fight!

Ohio is not Kansas. Ohio went for Obama twice while I believe Kansas did not. Also, Ohio voters put in a very left wing Sherrod Brown into the US Senate while Kansas has two Republicans. When Governor Kasich tried to rein in public employee unions he suffered a major defeat when the law he had passed was overturned via referendum.

Because Ohio keeps zig-zagging left and right, the Republicans stay moderate because they don't want to get run over in an election year when Ohio voters veer left.

Correct. Cincinnati tried to ban 30 round mags and they failed.
The problem you have in Ohio is it's littered with larger cities which are populated with the Democrats. Rural Ohio and the smaller cities don't have a problem with these laws.

We elected Kathleen Sibelius twice to the Governorship, and before that elected a Left-wing Progressive Republican by the name of Bill Graves to the office . Bill Graves vetoed the first several attempts to pass a concealed and carry bill in Kansas. Many Republicans in the Party apparatus are Progressive Left-wing Republicans.

Kansas politicians are nowhere near as Conservative as the National News Media portrays them. At least not till the last couple of elections. Now at last the elected officials are beginning to reflect the voters.

It was not an easy fight to get Concealed Carry Passed, as we had to fight the Party establishment, and replace and unelected many long time Republican Office holders.

It was doable, but not easy.

If you give up with out a fight, you will never win.

If you accept defeat before the battle is ever joined, you will surely lose.

On the other hand, there are a lot of gun owners who don't want to rock the boat, get involved, or fight for their gun rights.

Some even don't want Constitutional Carry for various reasons.

They can usually be found nay saying Constitutional carry for one reason or another and downplaying it's chance of passage.

Yeah. That republican leadership is working out great for Kansas. Lol.

At least we now have competent leaders, unlike the previous leadership under Graves and Sibelius. Remember Kathleen Sibelius? You know, one of the people in Obama Administration that didn't pay their taxes and was the one in charge of Obamacare?:barf:

Governor Brownback has 16 years of previous disastrous economic policy to change, and he is doing it without whining about how other people screwed it up, and with the united opposition of all the News Media, television and newspapers. Unlike certain National leaders of the other party.

And Governor Brownback and the new Republican leadership in Kansas supports gun rights. Unlike the leadership of certain other States and the Federal Government who are of a different political persuasion.
By the way, they aren't doing a very good job of managing the economy, Foreign Policy, the National debt or securing the borders, in fact they want open borders. I will back the current crop of elected Kansas officials against any bunch of gun banning politicians you want to name.:neener:
