As far as range, if you are talking target shooting the 270 with the right loads should have no problems 1000 to 1500...

I just got a Loaded M1A in December. I've only shot it once 60 rounds of mil surplus. At 50 yds I shot gruops that ranged from 1" to 1.5".
At 100 yds. I have a six shot group. It might have been 3 to shot groups

I shoot a 45 Colt in a Ruger Blackhawk with 4 " barrel
The only loads I loaded with 300gr were Sierra jacketed flatpoints I think and either uniq or 2400. Speer #13 lists loads for 300 gr jacketed bullets 2400 gives more velocity.
