    Gun Show origins

My guess is that most started as collector's clubs. Like any other collectable, the collectors started trading among themselves, and some vendors showed up to make a profit. Eventually the vendors outnumbered the collectors. Not unlike rock and gem shows, stamps, sports memorabilia, etc...

Got a great tip at work last week

Deleted - reading is fundamental, and I missed the point that it was a summer cabin, and therefore probably not currently inhabited by tenants.

Are You Stupid for Concealed Carry?

My experience during the First Gulf War, in Iraq, and in holding a burglar in my home at gun-point until the police arrived taught me that guns are useful for much more than killing someone.

    Milling Questions

I will be surprised if the university allows you to build weapon parts in their machining lab. It would be a nice surprise, but surprising none the less.

    922r Help

You can not have more than 10 of the following AK parts. The list below includes only parts applicable to an AK from a larger list in 922r. That means that 6 of the parts must be US made. 1. Barrel 2. Receiver 3. Front and Rear Trunions (Applies to stamped receivers only) 4. Bolt...

    Pawn shop disaster

Perhaps that "nasty packing grease" you cleaned off was all that stood between pristine steel and the rust you saw a couple of weeks later? EDIT: Don't take my comment as too negative. I am merely commenting that there are places where a layer of nasty grease on a gun is a good thing, and...

    Thoughts on Machine Gun Shoots?

I shot Uncle Sam's for free and they were not that big a deal. I enjoy myself more plinking in the woods with a pellet rifle.

"Guns proliferated in spite of themselves..."

Don't forget that humans tend to be frightened off by the display of power. The gun with it's loud report, muzzle flash and smoke production made a far more impressive display of power than a bow. This display had as much to do with initial success of guns (especially when facing cultures...

    Long Term Storage of Rifle

    Storage

As a milsurp collector with 100+ in the collection, I have weapons that I have not fired in many years (or at all in a few cases.) A couple of years ago I decided to go through the entire collection, and clean them all. Please note that all had been cleaned before they were put away. Some had...

What is the next milsurp wave?

Eventually North Korea will fall apart, and if the Norks behaved like all their fellow paranoid communist regimes did, then it is reasonable to expect that they have a bunch of old guns sitting in cosmoline waiting to be sold for hard currency.

Any ideas on building a target retrieval system?

I have not done it, but that won't stop me from offering the following: Most importantly: ensure that a shooter engaging the moving target will not be able to fire outside the safe limits of the range. On most ranges firing at targets anywhere other than straight in front of the shooter is a...

Castle Doctine: You can, but should you?

I have been in the situation. I didn't have to shoot, and I am glad that I didn't. I waited in the dark until the bad guy had crawled completely through my broken guest room window before apprehending him at gunpoint. Bad guy left in cuffs with the cops, and my life was considerably more free...

    Big Recoil

I've never been particularly turned on heavy recoil. A day plinking with a .22 (or even a nice air rifle) in the field is far more pleasant than a day of being pounded by the recoil of a light weight magnum revolver or bolt action centerfire rifle. Given the choice of shooting a .22 or a .357...

Stopping power - top loads for each caliber

Lets take another example: The M1 Carbine has more muzzle energy than a .357 magnum, yet the .357 is considered a proven manstopper, and the M1 Carbine had a poor reputation for stopping power. How can that be? The answer is simple. The M1 carbine had poor stopping power when compared to...
