The GBL addresses three of the most common changes for the G: big loop, full mag tube and PG stock. If those features are more important to you than the G's half-mag, straight stock and standard loop then get a good GBL and be happy. I've stuck with the 1895G, but really, get a good one of...
When reloading 45-70 please keep in mind the capacity differences between Starline, Remington and W-W brass. Hornady as well.
It may not matter for the level you choose to load at, but then again, it sure might.
I've used the Laser Cast 350 & 300 grain RNFP extensively in my 1895G. I've used Unique to run both the 300 & 350 at ~1100 fps, great fun to shoot. I've used 2400 to run the 300g at 1400 fps and I've used Rx7 with the 350g to run 1640 fps.
I've not had any leading issues and accuracy, after...
I'm gonna stick by my earlier answer. For the 390g RN you can use the 405g PB data from Accurate up there in my link.
(or kick it with 12g of Unique and a LR primer)
(Alliant 2400 is great for this kind of stuff as well. Attached is the data from the Alliant 1996 manual for a 385g cast...
.458 might work OK but a .459 or .460 would be my preference in an 1895G.
H4198 or Rx7 are great powders if you want to launch them at modern lever action pressures and speeds.
But a plain based three lube ring lead bullet that might be a hair undersized I 'd be tempted to launch at...
I've used a Williams 5D on both my Marlin 1895G and 1894 44RM. Was able to keep the stock front sight and hood with both. I like the 5D because you can screw lock your settings, if you want to have click adjustment the FP model is your option. I'd recommend you buy a 'Twilight' aperture for...
The Remington 300g HP will leave you with good standard brass and run ~1525 FPS for you. The 405g load will run ~1100 FPS. I started with those in my 1895G and am still getting use from that brass.
Considering the Leverevolution shoots well and is easy on the wallet, you may want to shoot it...
I get consistent drops with a Lee PPM if I remember the following:
>Keep the hopper half full or more
>Use a consistent lever force
>When starting, ditch the first five and then go on a run with it
>If I stop dispensing for more than a minute, start over and ditch the first five again
On a bad...
I contacted them in 2009 via email and asked them for the last refresh of their load data. At the time it was 2004 for 45/70 and 44 Rem Mag. I'd say ask 'em again before you buy. If it's still 2004 data I'd get the Lyman 49th instead, it's a refresh of the 2004 data from the Lyman 48th.
I use 2400 to push the same XTP to 1740 fps in my Marlin 1894. Great results for me out to ~180 yards on deer and medium sized pigs so far. I haven't recovered one yet, they've all kept going.
For what the OP is looking to do with it, RC hit it on the head. Quit sweating speed and get that...
Now that I answered the OP's question maybe I can deviate a little and agree with the guys saying gas checks aren't necessarily a required item. Right now my best is a Laser Cast 350g pushed by A2400 to 1400 fps. I also use Rx7 to shove the same up to 1640. Either load is accurate and takes deer...
