.243 is a great choice, but you could also look into a 7-08 or 6.5x55mm (what I hunt with). Tikka makes a fine rifle for around $550 (check Gunbroker).

I hunt with a Tikka 6.5x55mm, which is very accurate and just a nicely designed modern gun. Just about any new bolt action is going to be more than accurate enough for hunting out to 300 yards. You might also look at a CZ550.

24.5 grains of Varget with a 69 SMK does the trick for me in my bolt gun. Just loaded 50 rounds tonight with Lapua brass and CCI BR primers. I've had groups as small as .3" w/my Savage 12FV, and I'm a lousy shot.

I use a 6.5x55mm Swede - very versatile round. My second choice would be a .308 and then a 7mm-08. Look at Tikka - a great gun for the money.

Got the Sig 226 last week. Only had the chance to put 25 rounds through it, but wow, what a nice gun. I like my XD9, but this is much nicer, for me at least, to shoot - so much control and balance, what a nice firearm.
