    Stevens Tip Up Rifle

Jeremy, I pulled off the peep sight and there are NO markings on it at all anywhere, I will try sending off some pictures to Lyman and perhaps they can help me. Definitely added later as the hole pattern is not exactly centered on the tang.

    Stevens Tip Up Rifle

Good point. This rifle was definitely manufactured prior to 1886, so would not have been designed with smokeless even remotely considered. Any idea if the Canuck rim fire that they did runs of in the 70’s were meant to mimic black powder pressures and such? I should have looked into the history...

    Stevens Tip Up Rifle

Hawg, I like this answer, and it is certainly a safe one to just use black as that is what the cartridge was originally designed for. That being said, they made .25 Stevens long and short cartridges with smokeless into the early ‘40’s it looks like and then Canuck did a run in the 70’s as well...

    Stevens Tip Up Rifle

Thanks for your reply Jeremy, do you have any more information on the “P” model or even how you determined what calibers it was offered in? I agree that the peep is a later addition, and probably not quite the right model as it’s so tall it doesn’t fold down flat with the tang, it hits the front...

    Stevens Tip Up Rifle

Hi all, I have my grandfathers gun that he had from when he was a child living in a Sod house on the prairie a LONG TIME AGO. He was born right around 1900 (I can't recall exactly). I have had this rifle for almost 40 years and not done anything with it. I always thought it was a 32 short...

where to go w/45 Colt in Rifle

This is a good recent thread so I will tag on, I am also trying to work up a load for my Rossi r92, 20”. Am using clays universal which seems to pretty much match unique for the load amounts. Using home cast Lee 255 RNFP. 8.0 grains matches velocity of my factory LAX ammo also 255 grains. 1000...

Recommend a good steel 45 Colt sizing die

I also have a Rossi in 45 colt and will be reloading starting just as soon as I get some suitable powder, like unique. With the oversized chamber that the Rossi’s are known for seems like just overworking the brass might be the culprit? Here is a thread discussing just neck resizing which might...

    My Most Recent Project

Thanks for this description, I always wondered how one might go about dovetailing but never looked into it. This seems doable with a bit of care.

    The OutlawKid

Yes, drilling and tapping the frame was tough with the arbor there. And the shield itself being an odd shape it would need to be a laser cut piece if doing many of these. A much more cumbersome solution, with potentially no additional benefits to those solutions already presented and actively...

    The OutlawKid

Bibbyman, your right, you would indeed, except I suppose if you hade a very small drilled hole in the shield that would line up with the peg, then the hammer would push the shield over the peg and lock it between chambers. The hole could be very small such that it would probably not at all...

    The OutlawKid

With the discussions on cap posts and action shields I am wondering if anyone, especially The Kid or Mike, explored a Kittredge style cap shield instead of the post and action shield? https://patents.google.com/patent/US41848 This was a patent from way back, so I don’t think the cap fragments...

    Oh, rats!

Well it is a smart rat in more ways than just it’s choice in powder, I have had no luck trapping him yet. I was a bit silly and used cheese as bait though, when really it should be a pure lead round ball with a dash of true black.

    Oh, rats!

Literally, rats. what in the world attracted them to lead and black powder!?!? They were purists though, as they pretty much left the pyrodex alone... Good thing I didn’t have any loose caps in there, one wrong bite and boom.

    Flash paper and revolver cartridges

But then again, maybe I am just jealous as some of you are turning out some really purdy cartridges.
