Because I have a responsibility to protect my family and the world is sometimes an unpredictably dangerous place. That includes both two and four legged predators in my case.
Since you are of an age, you can also add that you are now too old to take a beating.
I don't know how many deer I and my buddies have hauled out with one of these carts the last several years. It also fits under the tonneau cover on my truck.

I'll save you the trouble. The softest 6.5 bullet I know of is the Nosler 129 grain ABLR. That one is rated to expand down to 1300 FPS. Everything else I am aware of requires 1600 FPS impact velocity or higher to expand. 900ish is not going to expand. You can kill a deer with that, but I...

I have been fooling around with cast loads in 350 Legend at low speeds, eventually shooting for subsonic. Last year I ginned up a cast load based on a 207 grain bullet that chronos at 1150 FPS. We use this load for beaver hunting where the distances are generally short and you need a bit of...
I really like 35 Rem, but it has become expensive to shoot even with reloads. Fortunately, 350 Legend is extremely similar (I even use the same mold for cast bullets), and ammo, components, etc. are everywhere.
Is your marlin a 39a? If so, you have a bunch of options with quieter ammo. The Aguila subsonic is very quiet out of a longer barrel like the 39a and very accurate.
The argument for a pellet gun is that you can buy very quiet suppressed rifles without jumping through nfa hoops.
