This used to be mine…my first bolt action centerfire. A Savage Axis (all Incould afford). It is very accurate.
I loaned it to my son and he got his first deer with it while hinting with his grandfather.
It didn’t seem right that I keep it, so I gave it to him.
On the lookout for one for me now…
I have a few rifles that I might consider “safe queens”, but it isn’t so much about protecting them from wear…it is more that they have a special memory and when I take them out it is a special occasion and I think about the person that had them before I did.
I learned how to shoot with a Mossberg 183 .410 bolt action. I was feeling nostalgic and looked for one on Gunbroker last year and couldn’t find one at a price I was willing to pay, but I did get a Stevens 58b for $178. I am happy with it. I use it for the odd round of hand thrown clay...

I don’t always use it to charge with shot, as the larger shot can be difficult to dispense...

.260 Remington…I bought a Savage short action receiver and a Criterion barrel from Northland Shooters Supply. Stock is Bell & Carlson.
If I do my part…
Mine is very similar to yours, but has seats incorporated.
My father-in-law very kindly made it for me (top is material remaining from a deck project).
I built the deck the bench sits on with recycled deck boards.
I got the gift of time…I was able to work in the shop and build an additional oak storage rack for the gun safe…it has been designated as “rimfire row”…and it has an empty space…
I’ve scoped a 94AE…I can’t shoot accurately enough with the buckhorn sights.
It makes the difference between being able to accurately hit at 100 yards instrad of 50.
I’m willing to sacrifice the classic look for that gain in yardage.
I’m very fortunate to have 25 acres. I had wanted to own something about that size for as long as I could remember. My wife’s parents had built their retirement home on a beautiful piece of land. We were having a Labor Day picnic with them and my father-in-law mentioned that the neighboring...
