Help me evaluate my CCW choice.

Steel Challenge. Take your gun and go shoot a steel challenge. I have shot every handgun I own in a steel challenge. If I can't shoot at least B class with a gun, I won"t even consider carrying it. Unlike USPSA and IDPA, Steel Challenge is purely draw and shooting, also no partial credit for...

    How Good Are You COLD

Somewhere between b class and grand master, depending on the the division and the gun.:D

    Snub Relevance?

. In my observations, people who don't train up, don't shoot anything well. Yes a snubbie is a little harder, but is definitely doable if you put in the effort. If you don't train up you are counting on luck to get a hit. If you were lucky you wouldn't need your gun to begin with...

    Snub Relevance?

Did the officer "have" to fire 12 rounds to defend himself? Were there any misses involved? Was there poor accuracy or poor tactics involved? The trooper in the Kehoe shootout emptied a full size duty gun at basically point blank range and hit nothing. Did he "have" to use the whole magazine...

Things learned from concealed carry matches.

I think some people find it easier to just look at a gun as a magic talisman. They may not be able to hit anything with it, but they do have a gun, and it is in at least X caliber. So in their mind, they are good to go.....

Things learned from concealed carry matches.

I would say you are likely correct in your assessment of their thought processes (or lack thereof). But, just because you don't shoot a gun well, doesn't mean you can't practice and learn to shoot it well. Or you could go to a gun that is just as compact in a smaller caliber. People shooting...

Things learned from concealed carry matches.

Another thing I learned: I shot a Beretta bobcat in a couple of the matches. Due to the hand filling grip diameter, the low bore axis, and the 22 lr chambering, it was surprisingly easy to shoot well in spite of the tiny sights. However, it never made it through a 4 stage match without multiple...

Things learned from concealed carry matches.

"I honestly wish IDPA would let BUG guys pocket holster so that real world let down could sink in for a lot of folks" Yeah, it turns out pocket carry is not a winner. Some of the participants were really surprised how slow their draw was.

Things learned from concealed carry matches.

After observing people carrying small guns, and never seeming to practice with them, I decided to create concealed carry matches at our local range in an effort to get people to actually shoot what they carry. Really inspired by a young man who has since become a cop. He was always practicing...

    Snub Relevance?

The question is not whether the gun is capable, but whether you are capable. Jerry Miculek with an LCR and a couple of speedloaders is good to go. Most of the people I see at the range, uh, not so much. I have shot a couple of uspsa matches with a j frame. Not a recipe for a high ranking finish...

    Which Moonclip Rack/Holders for ICORE/USPSA?

I prefer the Speed Beez. Holds things securely, yet allows you to get your reload without undo force or movement.

Getting Better With My Revolver for Steel Challenge

Congrats. Glad to hear you're making progress. Yeah, people do look at you a little different when you shoot a revolver in rimfire division and that is understandable as it makes it tough to do really well. Made a small bit of progress at the last match myself. Got a rfpi A class stage in the...

New Sig P365 in .380. Why??

Recoil matters. Doesn't matter whether it is excessive or not. Every increase in recoil reduces your performance, even if only a small amount. A 44 magnum with full power loads (180 grain bullets at 1700+ ft per second) can be fired at a rate of 3 rds a second by a 165 pound man in a bill drill...

Shot The Steel Challenge With My 617

I can identify with getting older. I'll be 60 this year, but I'll be darned if I dont find myself still trying to run with the young guys. I am a revolver only shooter now. I dabbled with autos for a while, but could never really learn to like them. My steel challenge rimfire revolver is an 8...

Shot The Steel Challenge With My 617

Thats a huge change in trigger action and muzzle weight going from a volquartzen to a 617. It's gonna take some adjusting for sure. Hard to start and stop that kind of weight quickly on super fast transitions. Hang in there!
