to echo others: my factory stock was crap, the rest of the rifle is as good as anything else savage makes. Mine in .308 will eat up any bullet 150 grain or higher and seems to love the 180grain hornady. It's a great rifle.

i found outlawstatebullets supersonic 300 grain semi's to be great for deer and pigs, and reasonably priced.

i made a cheap practice round for my .35 rem 760 (and a couple of my friends) using 158 cast lead RN bullets, and 11 grains of H110. They're accurate to about 65 yards before the rate of twist makes them suddenly shoot a "pattern" instead of a tight group. No recoil, low noise, fun to shoot. YMMV

you can probably find a light- profile barrel used one for $800 that will save you quite a bit of time. If you're looking to just build one for the fun of it, then have at it.
