    Trouble in the Big D

OP, I know that area of Dallas very well. I lived there for over 5 years. FWIW, nice work! You and your family walked away from a situation - unharmed and able to carry on - for the measly sum of $30. H*ll, you would have (and may did ) spent 5X that on dinner alone in the West End...

Looking for a new 9 for CCW

I think you're on the right track with Ruger SR9 series. I recently bought a SR9 and it's been a blast to shoot. No problems of any sort and we put 500 rounds through it in one afternoon. I really like it and wouldn't hesitate to use it as my CCW. I hope this helps! Take care...

    Which 1911 should I get?

Check out the Springfield Armory 1911's. I have several of them and for me, they make one of the best 1911's out there (in their respective price points). I have a lot of 1911's, and my 2 favorites are both Springfields. I carried both as CCW for years (not at the same time; chronologically...

    9mm range gun

As others have said, I recommend trying a BHP or CZ-75. Find a local range that rents them and put them through the paces. I think you'll find both are outstanding pistols...and, arguably, two of the most natural pointers on the market, esp. (with all due respect) to the 229 platform...

    9mm vs 45 comparison

Since 9mm is a standard NATO caliber it is plentiful in all sorts of configurations. It's interesting to note that once the Weapons Ban was lifted how fast the 9 regained traction. I carry a Sig P250 in 9mm, normally loaded with 124 rounds of some form or fashion. I feel as "safe" as I do...

How many of you can defend yourself without your firearm

I concur 100%. Go to a local Dojo or Martial Arts gym and ask to spar for just 3 minutes, just 3 minutes, and see how you do. Fighting is one of the most taxing experiences we can experience, and often a battle of attrition. IMHO, conditioning is just as important as the fighting style...

    A Stoppage Reduction Overview...Tap, Rack...

Great - and oft overlooked topic - that we all should know. I've been practicing pistol failures for some time now. What I've learned isn't earth-shattering, but to me it's important: you need to recognize what issue your firearm is having and if it's worth trying to clear and re-engage the...

How many of you can defend yourself without your firearm

I fought competitively for years, so I'm reasonably confident in my abilities. Of the 4 fights I've been in during my "adult" life (post 40), I've only ever used Aiki-Jitsu or Judo and have emerged the winner (if anyone ever wins a fight) each time. I've not thrown a punch or been punched...

    Help Identifying This Pistol

Thank you for the replies: very much appreciated. I'll pass on the info to him and see what he wants to do. I ran several searches but was unable to locate a slide. I'm sure they're out there, but finding one may be a challenge. Thanks again for the assistance. Regards, DFW1911

    Help Identifying This Pistol

All, A friend of mine inherited this pistol when his grandfather passed away. There is no slide: he's in the market for one but has no idea what he has. So he sent me 4 blurry photos of it. I cleaned them up the best I can and they are attached. Here's what we know: Italian...

    Greatest Robbery Ever!

I couldn't agree more. The guy crashing through the ceiling...I don't think I'll figure that one out anytime soon !!!

Anyone heard of a "quadrant" as a weapon?

CWL makes a great point. I think that many folks are under the impression that a gladiator fought all the time and always to the death. The reality is that when they started gaining popularity, they'd fight, maybe, 3 or 4 times per year, and as CWL points out, not always to the death...

Anyone heard of a "quadrant" as a weapon?

Thanks, all, for the responses and education. Looks like we have a winner with that explanation! This site actually sells them...don't know what I'd use one for unless I volunteered to enter the arena and battle it out! URL to a picture of a Quadrant...

Anyone heard of a "quadrant" as a weapon?

All, I'm a Roman-history junkie and was recently doing some research when I came across this phrase regarding an injury to a gladiator: "From examining a knee injury, it was revealed the injury was inflicted by a quadrant, long thought to be a religious weapon; but it was also used in the...
