What Kind'a Loading Manual(s) Are At Your Side When Handloading?

All of them. Hodgdon #27 was nearby when this pic was shot.

    Why did you start reloading?

To make shooting .45 Colt affordable and to get away from the anemic factory loads. This evolved into loading highly accurate ammunition for my rifles.

    .308 Win - Pet loads?

I used to seat the rounds long but decided that I wanted my magazine fed rifles to feed the cartridges through the magazine. Someday I'll have a match grade .308 built with a minimum spec chamber, neck and a short throat I'll experiment with this again.

    S&W Model 625

I bought a 625-5 from the SF Gun Exchange in 1993 when they first came out. In 1994 I bought a condo and sold the gun to cover closing costs. Silly me, I've never seen another one. IIRC it doesn't say ".45 Colt" but rather .45 Model of 199? on the other side of the barrel.

Can a .358 jacketed bullet be used in a .355 barrel?

Parker Ackley experimented with bullet diameter and pressure and discovered that the diameter of the bullet has less effect on pressure than the chamber neck dimension. With a larger diameter bullet the chamber needs enough clearance for the brass case to expand and release the bullet. Once...

    What brass?

I like RWS (expensive), Lapua, Hirtenberger, US Military (LC and TW headstamps), Federal and Remington in my rifles. Winchester, Remington and Federal in the handguns. I keep all of my rifle brass sorted by headstamp, and sorted by rifle if the brass has been fireformed in a bolt action.

    Quick case dimension question

Are you calculating case volume or case wall thickness? I measured case wall thickness a number of years ago and got .012 to .014".

    Not-so-great moments in handloading history...

Set up your decapping die or use your sizing die but back it out a couple of turns and reset the decapping pin so it will make contact. Set the shell holder on top of the your standard shell holder and gently push out the primer. (Only necessary if you're using a decapping stem with an...

    Case trimmer compare

Giraud for .308 here, Forster and a drill motor for everything else. With the Giraud you can process over one hundred cases during a single commercial break. I posted a review of the unit here a couple of years ago. It might still be around.

    S&W Model 625

I tried a few shots the other night and everything came out over exposed. I took this one tonight and it came out looking a lot better. Top to bottom, 625-2 Model of 1988 in .45 ACP, 625-6 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt, 625-2 Model of 1989 in .45 ACP.

Compressed loads...Need the experts on this.

Some powders respond very well to compressed loads. H4227, H322, Varget and H4350 have all responded very well to compressed loads in the appropriate cartridge and with the appropriate bullet weight. Magnum pistol powders like H110 or AA#9 need to be compressed or they don't work very well...

One of my favorites. Korbin Dallas: Shoots megaloid leader between the eyes "Anyone else want to negotiate?"

Quit being selfish and post some pictures. We promise not to drool too much. :-)

    Remington 700 floating and bedding

The amount of torque can make a big difference if the stock material between the trigger guard and receiver is a compressible material such as wood. This is less of a difference with a bedded rifle but still a factor. It becomes insignificant with a pillar bedded rifle because there is so...

    Remington 700 floating and bedding

Bedding is glass bedding the action into the stock. Gunsmiths do this by painting the action and trigger guard up with release and pulling it into the stock after painting the inside of the stock with fiberglass resin. Once it sets you take out the action, clean away any oozed excess and you...
